Supermarkets Grocery Shrinking

2

Comments

  • Whilst shopping in our local Asda, my wife picked up a pack of chicken wings and straight away noticed that it was in fact a smaller pack than normal. On checking the shelf label, she was horrifed to see that the price being charged should have been for a pack weighing 702g but that she was actually only getting a pack with a weight of 615g!! If supermarkets insist on ripping customers off, they should atleast make sure that all proof of the previous price, weight etc is removed!! I was so perplexed that i took photos of the shelf label for proof. E-mailed Asda to complain, still to receive a reply!!!

If supermarkets insist on ripping customers off.

Thats not the case though is it. Food has never been so cheap due to Supermarkets. In the 70's people spent 20% of their income on food, now it's only 8%.

Would you perfer it to go back to the old way and spend 250% more on food than you do now?

    Isn't that a separate issue?

Just because something is cheaper than it ever was, if the price quoted is for a larger bag, that could be verging on the illegal?

However, if it could be argued that there is no price for the smaller size...?

It's an error yes but people assume Supermarkets rip people off. The fact is they supply very cheap food so it's not a rip off.

Supermarkets are not necessarily cheap, although they like to convey the impression that they are. Visit you local butcher and compare the price of meat. Because supermarket shoppers never see the inside of a butcher's shop, they don't realise just how much extra they are paying.
Another ploy used by supermarkets is the '£1 each or £1.50 for two' type of offer, frequently on perishable goods (meat pies is one example) knowing that the chances are that you will probably finish up throwing one away. Sadly, people fall for this type of deception.
Also, supermarkets screw farmers into the ground on price once they have got them into a situation where they, the farmers, have invested heavily in equipment. Any extra gains are not, of course, passed on to the customers.

The supermarkets have been doing this for year. Notice a couple of years ago that washing powder decreased in size. I wrote to Tescos and this is the response I got.

OP, PM one of the board guides your info. and they will pass to Martin as he likes to include things like this in his weekly tips.

I do. They all cost more! But I buy meat from there because I perfer it.
  • The worst trick of Tesco is not stocking the full range of goods eg Ariel washing powder. No Ariel Non-Bio but loads of Tesco's own Non-Bio!

Presumably they stock stuff they get better deals on. Stuff what the customer wants!

That's why I only go there for dog food. Sainsburys has a far better range.

The "very little helps dot com" website (no not a mis-spelling) has posts from real Tesco employees and they discuss some of the dirty tactics that supermarket employs. Worth a look if you don't like Tescos.
Don't grow up. Its a trap!

    Peace, love and labradors!

I think you've spectacularly missed the point of this thread.

This isn't a rant about prices rising. It's about the deceitful tricks employed by supermarkets and retailers to disguise price rises.

Why did Chomps have to get smaller? They could have simply stayed the same size but gone up in price by the rate of inflation, so that consumers weren't confused and misled.

the chomps were made smaller by cadburys not the supermarkets
supermarkets arent being deceitful in my opinion
