Call the ins co. Advise them that you didnt know that they would auto renew, but obviously you had shopped around and unfortunately, on this occassion they were dearer, but you will try them again next year.

Ask them to treat this matter with sympathetic consideration and tell them that you will send them a copy of your new ins schedule showing that you had placed the businee elsewhere and that dual insurance is in force and that you want the policy to be cancelled NTU.

If necessary, speak to the customer services manager, they may have more authority and also understand that you cannot be insured twice.

If cover was taken out after the expiry date of the old policy, you will not be able to do this.

The Post Office will auto renew, even if you paid by CC!!!

I cant believe everybody thinks i should pay and its not wrong to take money from my account without my consent,

You gave consent and you didnt tell them to cancel it.

All you had to do was read the renewal notice. 1 or 2 sides of A4 paper telling you what to do next if you do or do not want to renew. You didnt do that so it is your fault. Cold hard truth I'm afraid.

You can be insured twice; but should a claim be incurred then the settlement will be a matter of contribution by both insurers.

I cant believe everybody thinks i should pay and its not wrong to take money from my account without my consent, no to the question above ,there was not a gap between my nationwide insurance renewal date and me taking my post office insurance out, so i am not willingly going to take out 2 policies on my car, and if I did put a claim in that period before it was canceled, do you not think they would wriggle out of it anyway, because i have not payed?
Read the reasons why people think you should pay - by the look of it you c@cked-up in not cancelling your policy so you had given them permission to take the money.
If you can show that the condition is in the very, very small print of your policy AND isn't mention reasonably prominently in the renewal notice that they sent you then you may have some wriggle room IMO. However I think you'll find that like my renewal notice it is very clearly stated that it will be auto renewed unless you contact them, if it's not then say so.
  • If your post office car insurance policy was in place from the same date as the nw policy youre probably 'dual insured'. I would call them again and ask to speak to a supervisor and explain. its worth a try, i work for a insurance company and often if dual insurance occurs customers only have to pay part of the money that the company say they owe. i dont know about the specific company that you've been insured with thou.

    hope that helps

I also think you should ring and speak to them, explaining that you believe they have made a mistake and you werent aware they would automatically renew. They are reasonable people - my bank recently repaid me when they made charges for late payment on my credit card - I rang them said Id had my puter crash (true) and so the payment was a day late. Just explain to them the mistake and that you had taken out another policy. Im pretty sure they will call it quits.

Assuming this was in your paperwork, then people are saying you should pay because legally you have a contract that is legally binding.

So assuming it was not without your consent then the advice you are being given is legally correct.

You might like to try a complaint and you may get the amount reduced or waived as a "goodwill gesture".
This is simply because the company will not want to waste lots of money paying staff to argue over a small amount, so you can sometimes get success by being persistant.

Thank for all your replies I will phone on Monday and let you know how I get on , I do feel angry though, I've been a bank customer with Nationwide for over 20 years and used their car insurance for about 4 and feel its a bit of a shabby way to treat customers. I'll be reading all small print in future
