Grrrr! Laptop wireless problem

Options
Hi, is there anyone here who can help before I completely lose it with my laptop? I have wireless router and cable modem to which my desktop pc and laptop connect, usually without any problems. However, suddenly the laptop won't connect, although the network is listed and shows the name of the network adapter card. I have tried re-booting, re-setting router etc. but I keep getting the same message that there is no ip address for the laptop and when I go into settings sure enough there are just zeros where the ip address should be. I know it can't be the modem or router at fault because desktop pc is still connected and working fine. Can anyone help please?

  • Glad I'm not the only one! My head is spinning from the amount of reading I have done tonight trying to fix it, yet I am sure it must be something really simple. I was hoping that someone on here could help though, its the first time I haven't had a reply. And yes.........I have read through the sticky about wireless connections before anyone asks!

    Do you run Zone Alarm?
Update it if you do .... solved my wireless laptop connection problems.

I used to have a lot of disconnections with MIL's computer until I set a fixed IP on it. Look in the router stats and it should show you the IP address allocated to that machine. Worth a try.

  • Thanks Peter, but I need things put in simpler terms and also believe it or not my router does not have a name or make on it.........yes its true, even when i had a techie out he wouldn't believe me until he saw it himself! If its any help, the problem i seem to have is that both the ip number and the subnet number are both showing as all zeros. Can I just find these numbers somewhere simple and type them in somehow or another as I think that would solve the problem?

What type of operating system do you use? And what router? (I know its no name, is there a default gateway ip so we can try and identify?
  • Win XP, how do I find out the gateway default thing? By the way, for anyone new looking at this thread, I would mention that my desktop pc is still working fine on this wireless network, hence my posting here, so I guess that rules out a problem with the router or the cable modem.

if you use command prompt on your desktop and type ipconfig/all then the ipsettings incl default gateway will appear
  • ok thanks, will do that and come back
  • Right, there is just a blank next to default gateway
