Why are you moving?/Have you ever been burgled?

These are the questions I feel I'd like to know the answer to but is it 'bad form' (in which case tough luck - I want to know) to ask or can vendor refuse to answer/lie?

Well,I'm trying to sell a house at the moment that has previously been burgled. But if I have any viewers that don't ask me directly then I won't tell them that it has.

Yes I've been burgled. But it didn't force me to move then and it's not why I'm moving now.

Do people really just sell up if they've been burgled?

What if the house they're buying has been burgled before?

I asked, they all said no but some probably lied!

My policeman boyfriend knows from work which streets are burglar hotspots but if you don't have a local bobby as a friend then there are some crime stats on upmystreet.

Also, a house being burgled once doesn't mean it will happen again. Things like double glazing/rear access/burgular alarms all help. A large alsation or similar can't do any harm either!

If you move to a new house, check whether the council does free safety checks. Ours does as we are on the edge of studentville and they come and give you advice, make upgrades (free) and give out light timers and rape alarms. They check for any weak spots in access.

students are generally crime magnets as they tend to be utterly lacking in common sense.

they move into houses in fairly dodgy area, bring in lots of high value electronics, and walk around with expensive phones, laptops and mp3 players, and wonder why the local scum thinks it's christmas every new academic year.

  • I'm not saying being burgled would make you move on its own but it might signify a problem area. I want to move in part because I've had enough of the local crime - some of the things that have happened in my (small, pleasant looking!) street include a car-jacking, a triad war involving several cars being smashed to bits, car being petrol bombed, armed raid on the house opposite, several muggings, cars stolen, mine broken into, regular fights over parking, three attempted burglaries and people dropping take-aways all over the pavement....the last one is possibly not that big a deal!
Of course, if you ask me, the neighbours are lovely and I'm moving due to work ;)
I just wondered what is 'below the belt' to ask in case someone does!

Why bother asking if you yourself are going to lie about your reasons for moving? Your area sounds a nightmare.

I like what you said about students lacking common sense,it's what I've suspected for years. It's a shame these same students are our future.:(

It's part of the edukation process..........101 in street smarts. Or possibly a consequence of over protective parenting
