Okay, maybe someone could tell me what I'm looking for (minimum RAM etc) and I could go to the shop with a peice of paper? That might be easier :p

Thanks for any help by the way, appreciate it!

Slightly cheaper is this one. Should also do the job you need, but you probably won't get much cheaper than that, except maybe an EEE PC, but that would probably a little lacking, as its only got a small hard drive.

Processor speed won't really matter, as you don't seem to be doing much too strenuous. If its listed as being dual core (Intel) or X2 (AMD) then its going to be fast enough.
If it has Windows Vista, you'll want 2Gb RAM, as 1Gb can be a little sluggish with Vista.
Graphics won't really matter as you aren't planning on gaming.
Wi-fi/wireless (Most laptops should have this, but check anyway).
Hard drive size (In Gb) is nice to have a larger one, but its unlikely that you'll actually use it all.

Thats the main things to look for, though you'll be more likely to find a better offer online. Though you may be able to haggle them down in person.

Thanks, I'm guessing the higher the number the better it is lol. Knowing me I'll end up home with a really rubbish one but will give it a try.

Thanks everyone for your help, got me a Compaq F765. It's all sparkly and new and lovely. Well it would be if it would connect to the net anyway!

Sorry, I got into this one a little late, but for future reference I have found that Currys 'Clearance Laptops' can throw up some great bargains. Like these http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/cur_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1564565828.1217616196@@@@&BV_EngineID=cceeadeekhjmjghcflgceggdhhmdgml.0&page=ProductList&category_oid=-27411&fm=1&sm=0&tm=4&show_all=true

They are usually customer returns that hav been fully wiped and refurbished and all come with a 12 month warrantee. I got my wife an excellet dual-core Fujitsu-Siemens for £250, and its as new!

This one cost a bit more than the others but I'm in love with it :) got the net working now, sitting on my couch typing this right now.
