Sell or Scrap My Car?

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone can help me! I've got a 1996 P Reg Vauxhall Corsa, 59,000 miles which unfortunately is seriously corroded underneath, needs new oil sump etc. Basically, it would cost about £500 to fix and wouldn't really be worth it.

So I want to either scrap or sell the car somehow and get as much money as possible for it. Looked at the comments re webuyanycar.com so not really worth going for this and know I can get it collected and scrapped free of charge but wondering if anyone else has any other good ideas?

Any advice hugely appreciated!!!!

Thanks,

Sunshine369 :)

Should be worth at least maybe £150 as scrap.

Bits and engine will be worth a few hundred depending on the engine size.

3 people I know of, have scrapped their cars in the last fortnight.

    Mazda 626 - £230

    Escort - £200

    Fiesta - £130

You can remove whatever from the car too, tax, battery, switches, basically anything which you can recoup some more money from.

Some companies will collect, but if you can take it to a scrapyard yourself, you should get more money.

    Hope that helps :)

If it's just the sump then it's a quite straight forward repair from my experience. 2nd hand sump from scrap yard and a couple of hours labour, job done.

A few weeks back I changed my car, my old was a runner but had a couple of problems that would of needed sorting out in the medium term (before next MOT) - the cost to do this work would of been more than it's value so wasn't worth me sorting it out.

I had two choices, first choice was to scrap it, in my area the rates are upto £100 for pickup, or upto £150 if take it to a place 40mile away

I wasn't too fussed on what I got for the car so decided to go with my second option and put it on ebay as a bit of fun, the car was sold on ebay for £190 and picked up the next day.

I know it is all probably relative, but what are you replacing it with?. Just thinking about some dealers that offer you about £1k for your old car (with MOT but regardless of condition etc). Might be worth PX'ing it if you can get a deal like this (although they probably bump up the cost of the new car to cover it though!)

Made me feel better though when I got £1k for my old banger a few years back against a newer car.

i just scrapped a 4 door fiesta last weekend and got £140 they charge you £2.50 per tyre to recycle them though.
  • Hi all,

Thanks very much for all your advice . Found a local scrapyard which wil give me around £100 for it plus certificate of destruction - should also be able to get a refund on my remaining road tax which I will be able to put towards another car (banger! - don't really use it enough to trade it in and get something a bit more up-market just yet but thanks for the suggestion, Pete, will hopefully do that next time!).

I could have replaced the sump but the whole underside is so badly corroded and would all have needed welded, too - which the guys probably wouldn't do as the bit round the plastic petrol pipes would need done, too!

Thanks very much again for the tips!

i know its a bit naughty but if you fill the engine block through were you would put your oil in , with water you can add a considerable amount of weight to the car , and earn a bit more cash...
  • surely drive it until it goes bang or mot expires then scrap it, however in the mean time run an advert on ebay or where ever, you never know who would pay for it!
