If you live in an NTL/Telewest area then they are both quite good, plus wireless routers are cheaper for cable than BT (but only about £20 so not too big a deal).

A wireless router will broadcast your internet connection around you home, so you can use it, for example, on a laptop while upstairs, or in the garden. It is only necessary though if you have more than one computer, or the computer is a long way from a phone socket.

If you just have one PC then your internet provider will send you a basic modem (which can be used on one computer).

Will you use the internet a lot? If not then old fashined pay-as-you-go dial up might be the best option. You just connect your PC to the phone line and get your internet connection by making a phone call (usually to an 0845 number).

It is slow, but only costs 1p/2p a minute in the evenings/at weekends.

I think you;'re right - pay as you go would work best for me right now. Tiscali seem to be best price-wise - are they any good for service?

    All dial up suggestions welcome!!

I don't think so, but if you're talking pay-as-you-go dial up you should never need to call customer services, if anything goes wrong just switch to one of the many other millions of free ISPs.

    Try adial.co.uk:

    Telephone number: 0845 665 3000
    Username: uk2
    Password: uk2

You do not need an account - just set up a new internet connection with those details!
  • If you want the nearest thing to pay-as-you-go on broadband then Metronet is for you. http://www.metronet.co.uk/adsl/paygo
Very good customer service but definately no-frills.

The best thing to do is go to https://www.adslguide.org
People on there are so full of information and very helpful.
I only started on broadband a couple of months ago and that's where I got all the help I needed.

Tescos have a good PAYG dialup service - 1p offpeak; 3p daytime. Register online at https://www.tesco.net for free CD or used to be £1 in the store. You can always get Broadband later if you need it.
