Philips C12 U Phone

Hello,

We've used these phones in our family since they came out. When they break we buy replacements on Ebay. They're getting thin on the ground there now so I'd like to know if there's any other comparable deal - ie, 5p calls between U Phones, 5p texts to anyone anywhere (from and to overseas as well).

The most imporatnt part of this is the ability to send texts for 5p from anywhere in the world. All the other '5p' text merchants seem to slap on a hefty roaming charge for this.

Also, does anyone know if it is possible to put U Phone sims into other phones? I've tried switching our U Phone sims between our U Phones and other 02 enabled phones and they don't seem to work with anything but the original one they came in.

T-mobile talk and text your mates for 5p with our Mates Rates, U sims are locked to the specific mobile
If I helped or saved you money - Thank me
If I helped you spend some money - spank me
    If I done both - :lipsrseal me:eek:

Putting the sims in another phone will enable you to keep the contract that you are on along with 5p texts and 5p calls etc.

Only problem is, I think that the sim design must have changed since the U phones because they don't seem to work in newer phones. Try the sim in an older phone (one that came out a similar time to your C12.

I think I might even have an old C12 phone lying about at home doing nothing!

    seaniboy,
T Mobile Mates is okay in the UK but it doesn't seem to have 5p international texts. That's a major drawback for me as I want to keep in touch with family roaming the world.

    MORPH3US,
I've tried the sims in our other C12s and I bought a C12 without sim off Ebay once but none of these has worked. I haven't tried any other older phones. It's as if the sim itself is locked, rather than just the phone.

I think o2 can send out a new sim but keep you on the same deal, I am sure someone I used to work with done this, I think he had to argue a little to get it maybe ;)

I had a chat with o2 today. They said the U phone tariff was going to be killed off next year and if I wanted to transfer my number and sim to a new phone I would have to change to a (much) more expensive tariff.

    hi
I have a couple of c12s and heard the same about these tariffs. I'e killing them off.

    1. O2 have just been bought out.

    2. These companies are usually keen to keep customers happy and will very likely compensate you if they end this service.
I think anyone buying a c12on ebay could do very well out of it.

personally, I would expect a new phone from them.

Women and cats will do as they please, and men and dogs should relax and get used to the idea.
  • O2 haven't been bought yet. They've agreed to be taken over by Telefónica but that won't happen until well into the new year, and will have to be agreed by the regulators and shareholders first.

I'm surprised that it's been possible to keep these SIMs going by replacing the phones: I thought a specific SIM was associated with a specific phone and vice versa. Early BT Cellnet (as they were then called) pay-as-you-go phones stored the credit in the handset until someone discovered how to fiddle it.

Well, I haven't managed to do that. Each time a phone has died on me I've simply bought another (with its original sim) on Ebay.

Ah... thought you meant you'd found a way of replacing the phone but keeping the original number. I've seen a lot of queries in the past about how to do that.
