I've not paid gas in 18months

Hi all
My OH and I moved into a new build a year and a half ago and we just realised that we haven't recieved any gas bills. This may sound daft, but we're good paying bills that come through the door, this one never has.

We've had lots of Scottish Power electric bills, so do we assume that our gas would be with them too?

Should we contact them directly, or speak to Bellway first?

I can only assume that someone has been paying the bill, so is it likely to still be bellway? I thought we got all that sorted as we moved in, but I can't quite remember now.

Also, I presume we owe a pretty penny by now, are they likely to give us time to pay it off? It'd be pretty difficult for us to pay it all at once...

Please help!

    Hi
One of two situation you are in
The first is that builders have failed to notify of the change of responsibility so you should call transco (xoserve) automated line to find out who is supplying the property the number is 08456013048 then call that company to say you've responsible and give them today's read, if they have failed to bill you for over a year you could probably get away with it, they will need to sort who is liable for the o/s bill if there is one themselves. The other situation which is more likely is that as it's a new build the meter (mprn) is shipperless ie has not been nominated a supplier this would therefore mean you need to do a new sign up to your preferred supplier explaining the supply is shipperless and there would b no bill to pay don't be helpful and give them the meter read from when you moved in as this will only make them bill you from that, any questions give me a shout.

    Hi mcmn,thanks for that.
We've just rung transco and they told us that our transporter would be on our gas box, as new builds after 2000 aren't available for them to know.

We are now phoning Scottish Power (who provide our electricity) to ask if their gas people have heard of us!

We can't give them an original reading anyway, we don't have one.

Thanks for your advice, we shall see how this goes from here....

Sounds like your property is on an Independent Gas Transporter, will explain why Transco can't tell you who supplies as they don't have access to information about anyone on an IGT.

    Hi Chrism,
Could you give some details as to what that means please?

We've rung scottish power and they aren't supplying us, so I guess we really might be shipperless.

The box only told us that we use ES Pipelines, and nothing about our supplier. God I hope we really are shipperless, then we can just start paying from here, is that right?

right ring natinal grid back (formerly transco) say help at any point and you will be put through to an agent - once through to m number enquires tell them the name on the meter is as you state and ask for a contact number then call them up and they will be able to check who is a registered supplier for your property. if it is a new build property also advise the agents of this to enable a more accurate search.

National grid is open 24hrs a day to call

Hi all. Managed to find time (brother got married this weekend) to ring E S Pipelines today, and they say we're registered as having e-on as our provider.
The others on the estate are signed up to scottish power, so I find this a little unusual. We will ring e-on a little later to get to the bottom of this, but it would be nice to have a bit of knowlege before we do so. mcmn18 said they thought we may not be liable because it's gone on so long - does anyone have any further advice on this?

    Thanks in advance.

Spoke to e-on today, and they are now aware that they have been supplying us without us paying. They seem to think that Bellway forgot to inform them that we had moved in, as most of the rest of the estate are supplied by someone else. E-on are now going to contact Bellway to see if they can figure it out, but best guess at the moment is that we may need to pay the last year's worth at an estimated amount.

I'm quite worried about this now, as a grand or so in one hit is not really an option for us. I'm glad we've been honest about this now we've realised the oversight, but I'm really nervous now as to what will be happening next.

Is this likely to be the best way to do things as they will be wiping 6 months worth of liability, or can we hope for anything better? Please help.

If you didn't tell your supplier you were in the property you will be liable for everything. Eon should be more than happy to spread your balance over the period of time you've been there, so for example if you've been there 18 months they should be happy to set up a direct debit to collect consumption monthly plus 1/18th of the debt per month.

My Nan has been living in her house since 2002 and has never recieved an electricity bill! My Mum rang all kinds of companies to try to get it sorted out, but just kept being passed around and gave up after a couple of months. My Nan has been putting an amount into a savings account every month so if she is asked to pay it all in full she will be able to!

There's a system called ecoes that most suppliers have access to that should help track down your nans supply. It's best to make a note of her meter serial number to help verify the details. If your nans address (postcode in particular) has changed make sure you have both the old and the new details. Is it a new(er) built property, they are notorioulsy hard to get sorted. If so what was the plot number and the builder? These details should help someone track it down. One last point if it was a new build it's most likely to be Eon (they do more new builds than most).
