Three meat dishes a day is more than he needs.

He could have a meat dish each evening if he was to compromise on a cooked breakfast and meat sandwiches.

I second the Quorn mince. It is the best- we have fed it to meat-eaters in spag bol, lasagne and chilli before, with them none the wiser. If you don't tell him it's Quorn, he won't know :D xx

I struggle with the same kind of boyfriend by the way. Men, eh? ;)

OH eats cauldron sausages in sausage casserole - not sure if he's twigged or not ;)

Definitely do the bulking out of mince gradually, bit by bit so he doesn't feel deprived ;)

  • Dear moneysavers,

I have an obstacle to my efforts in saving money on the weekly food bill. My husband has a mental block when it comes to MEAT.
Essentially, for him, a meal is not a meal if it has no meat in it.
As you know, meat is on the expensive side, and personally I feel that meat twice a day every day is somewhat unhealthy (am I right? Opinions welcome!).
His workplace offers a free canteen for his lunches, so he is perfectly able to get his meat habit serviced once a day (that sounds almost rude hahaha), my work canteen also offers meat dishes though not for free.
What can I do to convince him that an evening meal does not have to be meat based?
Two slight problems: he does not like fish, and does not like eggs. He also has an appetite the size of Scotland.
Any help? Recipes he might like that are meat-free? Any persusaive health/cash arguments I can put forward??

  • I'm a bloke. If my wife told me she wanted to abandon meat from the dinner time plate, i'd look at her very oddly

Men value their food. Don't do this to him

You could wean him off the habit by having vegetarian dishes that have a bit of bacon in or sausage in. Those are less expensive.

The best way to convince someone to go veggie for some meals is to take them to one of the gastro-veggie restaurants which can be amazing, but not really an option on a budget. You could always try stir fry?

Also, don't cook your veggie food without fat. It is healthier anyway, but needs flavour so a little butter or olive oil will go a long way.

I think you need to look at ways to "reduce" meat and not suggest he gives it up completely.

I found serving a lentil dhal (curry) with just a little chicken stirred into his portion has kept OH quite happy.

Any mince meals are bulked out with lentils, mushrooms, peppers, grated carrots etc so that it goes further but still tastes of meat ;)
