urine in floorboards - what floor covering in bathroom

what floor covering does everyone put in their bathroom. i have just had to lift a fairly newish bathroom carpet because it stinks around the toilet area. i carpet clean around it a few times a year and use a bath mat.

The floor boards stink and i was wondering if anybody has any tips to get rid of the smell before i replace the carpet with something else?

Not sure what to put down as we have small children and i don't want anything too slippy? Is vinyl the way to go?

Definitely don't want to put anything down and then have the same problem again as this would be a real waste of money

Hot water and bicarb of soda will get rid of the smell.
Tiled floor is best; if you're concerned they will be slippy, get cermaic tiles used for swimming pools, changing areas, balconies etc etc

just bumping this up as it is starting to drive me mad!!! Put in bicarb which has soaked up some and brushed this away and now sprayed on vinegar on half to see if this works. i have taken up the whole carpet - really don't want the expense of a new floor covering. oh wants to get carpet again and just put it straight down on top of the floorboards like they are now. but i want to do something about the floorboards and put down vinyl or something.

is vinyl slippy in a bathroom, would hate my kids to slip. Thanks

Vinyl isnt overly slippery in the bathroom, in my old place I had vinyl and didnt have a problem and in my new place I have tiles and I use a bath mat with a rubber backing. No problems at all.

I remember when my aunt ran a children's home their bathroom floors were always tiled and not one kid slipped and she looked after 30 of them ranging from 2 months to 18 yrs.

    Carpets in bathrooms are unhygienic.

I've got vinyl in my bathroom at the moment. Can be a bit slippy but if your using bath mats as well then it shouldn't be a problem. None of us have fallen over yet :D

I have the same problem with DH and the sprinkling is much worse if alcohol is involved. The amount of times he hasn't lifted the seat........and then I've had the pleasure of sitting in it:mad:

Hope you find a solution soon.

Carpet in a toilet is pretty revolting. Tell your OH that he can have it if he makes sure that he cleans it at least once a week with a carpet shampoo. If he won't do this then tell him that you want something washable.

We have tiles in our bathroom with 3 small children and no one slips. It gets mopped two times a week - no bother and no smelly urine soaked floor covering. I don't know how you've coped with it, it would have driven me mad by now.

Why not get him one of those toilet trainer things - I think they may light up and buzz or do something when he gets his aim right - sorry to suggest it for your DH but to sprinkle on the seat or anywhere else is a huge no no.

Floating a ping pong ball to get the lads something to aim at is supposed to help.

We too had carpet on the bathroom floor when we moved in, and with three boys it did get a bit whiffy - ripped the whole bathroom suite and and replaced the floor with non slip vinyl and it looks nice, smells nice and is kind on the feet even on cold winter mornings (which ceramic tiles won't be unless you have under floor heating).
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

I have slate tiles in my bathroom and they are not slippy at all. have bath mats etc for getting out of the tub but to be honest the ping pong ball is a great idea. It certainly worked for our Ds
