it's definately 802.11b. Check out the pdf of the spec sheet and it quotes the speed as 11Mbps, also uses WEP encryption which 11g doesn't.
  • yeah it's definitely 802.11b.

I think some 11g routers will make all connected IPs fall back to 11b if there is any 11b on the network.

best check the specs of your particular router.
  • For what it is, this is a fantastic wee bit of kit. It looks great and once it is connected to your wireless network, it plays your music beautifully - sound quality is very good. BUT and it is an important but, it can sometimes be difficult to get it to connect to your wireless network!

On occasions I have spent 5 or 10 mins trying to get it to connect. To be fair I always got there in the end but it was extremely frustrating!

If you can get it for £50 it's probably not a bad deal but anymore than that and I would leave it.

WEP encryption? Isn't WPA supposed to be the stronger form of encryption or have I got it round the wrong way?

Yes, WPA is better than WEP. But I was illustrating that this item must be 11b as it only has WEP. 11g has the better WPA encryption.

Another good reason to buy one with 11g and not 11b :)
  • This product is now discontinued by netgear. The message is on one of their support forums on the netgear site. I don't have the link handy at the mo but will post later.

I hooked mine up 2 the free speaker set provided by nicknows.com (promotion lasr year) and has worked great ever since, so for distributing your mp3's around the house for 50 quid then its a good buy in my opinion.

I think I'm being a bit thick - what is this??

We have a PC with fab speakers on it and thousands of MP3's large hard drives etc etc...

We don't have a wireless network though so i'm hoping someone could explain to me if this would be a good thing to buy as a xmas present to a computer mad, music loving boyf!?? :D

Definately a good present for a music mad techie but you need some kind of sound system to connect it to plus you'll need a wireless network to run it (usually a wireless router that connects to your telephone line and a wireless network card or usb adapter that fits to your PC). I imagine that there possibly is a way to connect this with wires either by ethernet or usb but that kinda defeats the object of a wireless media server.

Don't know if anyone is intersted but you can get one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=52910&_LOC=UK for a couple of quid more which also handles video. This has not got wireless capability though so you would need a wireless game adapter which I think cost about £40. Makes it quite a bit more expensive but might be useful for someone.

the Netgear MP101 is indeed 11mb 802.11b only -- I suppose it is 'compatible' with 54mb 802.11g equipment, but then again a 300 baud modem is 'compatible' with a 56k modem :|

If you are only streaming audio / photos then 802.11b is sufficient for use

FWIW we have one of the Linksys WMA11b models in the kitchen, and even with signal strength below 30% it plays cleanly with no glitches, pauses, etc
