  • Try Mailwasher 2.0 at http://www.mailwasher.net/ ...a free downloadable programme that (after setting your options and provider info)at the press of a key checks your email server and shows you what is waiting for you there.
Before you download anything, you can mark items for Delete, Bounce, Blacklist...or add them to your Friends list. Anything marked for Blacklist will stay on a stored list for a specified amount of time. Anything that is recognised as possible Spam will be tagged as such unless you add it to your Friends list. You can also view the email header to see where it originates from.
My family all run this. It's brilliant! and it saves us from downloading all the Spam and eliminates the risks that Spam brings.
There is a buyable version too....Mailwasher Pro if you want a bit more.

I came across this website after being directed from the UK national Lottery.

Here's what they say " We are building a repository of phishing scam emails and websites to help people identify and avoid being scammed in the future. If you have received a phishing email and would like to submit it to Anti-Phishing Working Group, please send it to [reportphishing@antiphishing.org]."

I think they must make up a database. It wont hurt them if we send them a few more to look at ;)

I just had this email which seems to be a slightly different phishing try, perhaps aimed at those who would click the link because they have not ordered anything
Your order # 12405 has been accepted for the amount 840.00$ Sony DSC-F828 8.0MP Digital Camera

Your order # 12405 has been accepted for the amount 840.00$
Your card will be charged in that amount .Thank you for your purchase.

You can check the order in your profile.

Needless to say I didn't click on the link & my credit card company confirmed that no US$ charge has been made to my card.

Regarding phishing and also spam email is there a spam filter that returns a mail from you showing as undeliverable? ie as if your mail address was wrong?

I realise that writing to these people and asking them to remove your address from their list will most probably have the reverse effect, having just shown them your address is correct! However if there was a way that the millions of us receiving spam every day just bounced it back to them wouldn't it be great?
  • Hi,

Just to let you know, if you don't already: I've received several emails purporting to be from Paypal, telling me that a payment has been sent to... At first I thought someone had accessed my Paypal account, but having followed the link (stupidly) to challenge the payment, I soon realised that this was a scam. It looks very like a Paypal page, but none of the links work and it is just asking for your username and password in order to 'challenge' the payment. I've received three of these so far and obviously the immediate reaction is to make sure they haven't charged your account. Don't do it through the links you're given - visit Paypal themselves instead.

  • See, this is the sort of email that really bugs me. I've just received it and I get something along these lines every day. Are there really people out there who believe that you will get millions or are these just a wind up from bored, sad, lonely people? I prefer to believe the latter otherwise we are all lost! Here's the email...

    From: Mrs. Monica William

PLEASE ENDEAVOUR TO USED IT FOR THE CHILDREN OF GOD.

I am the above named person from Kuwait. I am married to Dr.Harry William who worked with Kuwait embassy in Ivory Coast for nine years before he died in the year 2004.We were married for eleven years without a child. He died after a brief illness that lasted for only four days. Before his death we were both born again Christians.Since his death I decided not to re-marry or get a child outside my matrimonial home which the Bible is against. When my late husband was alive he deposited the sum of 10Million Dollars (Ten Million United State Dollars) with one finance/security company in Amsterderm-Netherlands.
Presently, This money is still with the Security Company. Recently, my Doctor told me that I would not last for the next three months due to cancer problem. Though what disturbs me most is my stroke sickness. Having known my condition I decided to donate this Fund to church or better still a christian individual that will utilize this money the way I am going to instruct here in. I want a church that will use this funds to fund churches, orphanages and widows propagating the word of God and to ensure that the house of God is maintained. The Bible made us to understand that Blessed is the hand that giveth. I took this decision because I don't have any child that will inherit this money and my husband relatives are not Christians and I don't want my husband's hard earned money to be misused by unbelievers. I don't want a situation where this money will be used in an ungodly manner. Hence the reason for taking this bold decision. I am not afraid of death hence I know where I am going. I know that I am going to be in the bosom of the Lord. Exodus 14 VS 14 says that the lord will fight my case and I shall hold my peace. I don't need any telephone communication in this regard because of my health and because of the presence of my husband's relatives around me always. I don't want them to know about this development.

With God all things are possible. As soon as I receive your reply I shall give you the contact of the Finance/Security Company in Amsterderm-Netherlands. I will also issue you a letter of authority that will prove you as the original- beneficiary of this Funds. I want you and the church to always pray for me because the lord is my shephard. My happiness is that I lived a life of a worthy Christian. Whoever that wants to serve the Lord must serve him in spirit and truth. Please always be prayerful all through your life. Any delay in your reply will give me room in sourcing for a church or christian individual for this same purpose. Please assure me that you will act accordingly as I stated herein.
    Hoping to hearing from you.

N.B-PLEASE I WILL ADVICE YOU TO GIVE THE LAWYER IN CHARGE A CALL IN NETHERLANDS IMMEDIATELY, HE DOES EVERYTHING ON MY BEHALF AND HE'S VERY UNDERSTANDING AND I BELIEVE HE WILL LEAD YOU TO YOUR SUCCESS IN JESUS NAME AMEN.

They're not even that good at it :)

Although my spoof mails (supposedly from Halifax Bank PLC) are going straight to the bulk mail, at least one of them hasn't got my correct e-mail address

I often get these from supposed Ebay & Paypal, I always forward them to spoof@ebay or paypal but wonder if they actually do get reported, as I've never heard of any prosecutions.
