O2 declined my credit check - anything i can do?

Hi All,

I applied today to get a 3G iphone online from the Carphone Warehouse. It all seemed to go swimmingly, and i was even given a transaction number. it was only when i was on the phone to carphone warehouse trying to organise an alternative delivery address when they told me my credit check had failed.

The thing i would like to know is, is there anyway i can bypass this? I have no idea why it would be declined, i have no debts (apart from student loan which is paid in full each month), no credit cards, and i have a full time job. the only thing i can think of is that i have moved quite frequentley over the last 5 years.

I have never been declined for a phone contract before (Orange and Vodafone) so am at a loss as to what to do?

Any advice appreciated, thanks.

Sometimes with O2 you can pay a large deposit which will be held on your account for 4-6 months until they are satisfied that you are running the account properly. I would have thought though that CPW would have mentioned it to you.

I would have thought that moving fairly frequently and having no credit cards has gone against you in this instance. If they cannot find you on the electoral roll for the premises you are currently in that will also be a big black mark.

    Thanks Kimitatsu :-)

I have moved roughly once every year - this is mainly due to the fact that i was a student and had to keep moving student house. In regards to the credit card - i did have one 5 yrs ago and abused it (not horrendously! only by £1,000 and paid it off in full once i sorted myself out) it did cause me to have poor credit then, but since then i have made sure that i have never done anything to worsen it, so i thought that this would have righted itself by now?

Surely if it was still an issue i would have been declined for previous phone contracts with other suppliers?

As Kimitatsu said, O2 do have a scheme where they take a "bond" of about £100 for 3 to 6 months. I don't know if they do this for every customer though, it may depend on the individuals' circumstances.
