Rented property: Can tenants cap their pay-as-you-go fares?

My landlord has installed a pay-as-you-go meter in our 4-bedroom, 6-person property, which myself and the other tenants have topped up since I moved in over a year ago. I know paying monthly would work out cheaper - however none of us really know one another and therefore couldn't put the bills in any one person's name if we switched to direct debit, and pay-as-you-go has so far more or less kept the peace.

Now with the horrors of price hikes looming, as well as huge heating bills this winter, I was wondering whether we could all convince our landlord to cap. Is anyone in a similar position? Are there any pay-as-you-go deals out there?

Many thanks!
