Changing from a gas prepay meter to monthly bill

Hi there,
I'm a newbie and I've just been looking into changing our gas meter over. We're with Eon and we thought we could save some money by switching. We've lived in our council property for 3 years now and just never bothered to switch it when we moved in. Problem is that they've said I need to pay a switch fee of £50 for the thing to be removed!
Its really not fair since it was there when we moved in and I didn't realise it was actually costing us alot of money to prepay. Surely this is unfair on us as we thought prepaying would be cheaper?
Does anyone know how we can get the meter removed free of charge so we can save money on our £28-£30 per month gas bills?

I was under the impression that a pre pay meter does not need to be removed for you to switch to paying monthly. That the company can complete the switch over the phone without the need for pulling it out. I might be incorrect but do your research and ring up and speak with customer services, you might have got a grumpy person on the end of the phone that day who is trying to get yet more money out of us!:mad:0

I too have been quoted a fee for removing a meter, I think it was in the order of £50 .. I have never been told of ANY way of getting around this fee. ALso I have never been told of any "hardship" rates for people in fuel poverty (I pay more than 10% of my income in fuel, more like 15%...and its insustainable)tribuo veneratio ut alius quod they mos veneratio vos0
