This has happened to my ipod touch before...I think I gave up and reset the whole thing, can you do that with the nano? And do you mind re loading all the music?

You could also try re installing itunes

Have you enabled disk use on your iPod?

 Dunno. Don't know how to! You're not talking about enabling manual manage of music are you? If thats what you mean then I can't - it won't let me for some reason, hence my first post and crossed out text!
If you have nothing constructive to say just move along.

is this ipod synced to this computer. that is my first thought..

many people put tunes on the ipod from a friends computer, and when it comes to taking songs off, well, you can't, as you have to resync it totally with the computer you're using, thus losing the songs, because, as we all know, stealing songs is bad! home taping is killing the music industry, etc etc etc.. ;)

now, if it is synced with the computer, you should be able to untick - automatically sync when this ipod is connected, and then tick manually manage music and videos, this means you can manually do everything..
personally, i just sync playlists i want ot my iphone, and everything to my ipod, and never manually do anything, as it is just tedius..

On the screen where it gives you the option to manually manage music, there should be another option below it that says "enable disk use". If you check this box, it should enable you to check the "manually manage music and videos" box.

A hammer will do the trick, but I found the file system difficult after that.

Another vote for sharepod here, basically, you just put it onto the ipod and it works a treat.
