Hi clever techies!

[strike]
I am trying to remove some tunes from my ipod but don't mind leaving them on the puter in the library. However, I can't click on the manually manage music and videos option on the Summary tab for this device, and therefore all the music on there is greyed out and unavailable.

Am I missing doing something before I try to check the manual option? Or am I just being dense?! I'm sure I've done it before but can't remember.

Ta muchly!
Joho

Edit: when I look through the library, there are files with ticks against so am assuming these are the ones that are on the ipod - do I have to uncheck them or check them as required and then sync the ipod? Is that what I should be doing?
[/strike]

Edit: Ok, I'll simplify my question - HOW do I delete music from my ipod nano?

It depends whether you sync your entire library (if there is room), or if you just sync playlists. my library is enormous, so I just sync some playlists, so then I can add and remove to these playlists, and then the next time I sync the tracks are added or removed.

The ticked items will be played, the grey ones are on the library but wont play or be selected as iPod tracks when iTunes is on.

When the iPod is plugged in it should come up with 'iPod X' under the Library information on the left. When you click on that it will bring up the songs etc that are on the iPod in question. You can then select from the groups and erase the current tunes in the iPod and replace them with whichever you choose.

    Hope that makes sense!

To be honest I've only ever used Itunes once when putting tunes onto an Ipod for my wife. I instantly disliked it and hence found another application which I prefer. Its called sharepod and very easy to use even for someone with no previous Ipod experience. you can drag and drop from windows explorer so couldn't be any easier and also has more advanced options too. It runs from the Ipod itself so can be used with any pc. Its free and available here:

    I highly recommend it.

I think you need to enable disk use before you can manually manage songs.

In itunes you probably created playlist(s) for the songs on your nano. Simply select the ipod nano in itunes and press delete on the songs you dont want!

    Then press sync after

No, can't do that. All the tunes on the ipod are greyed out. I need to select the option to 'manually manage the music' on my ipod, but it won't let me select that option for some reason.

So, my very original question was whether there was something I need to do first in order to be able to select 'manual manage'?

Have you enabled disk use on your iPod?
