If this is an accurate bill, based on a reading, you will have to pay. However, I know at British Gas there are a number of payment options, which I presume extend to the other suppliers as well. These include direct debits, etc.

All I can say to everyone is PLEASE read your meter every 3 months at the most and submit the readings over the phone, over the automated phone service, or over the internet. Most companies have these provisions available. This saves a lot of hassle. Even though the consequences can be really sad, estimations are exactly that - ESTIMATIONS. If you have been underestimated for a long time, when an accurate reading comes around you WILL be billed and it can be a stupidly high amount.

Energy companies have to read your meter at least once every two years. Please bear in mind that it isn't the energy company themselves that actually read your meter(s), it is your distributors (the people who the pipes belong to, not the gas running through it).

    Hope that helps!!
