Netgear D834GT Firewall

Hi all,

I have a Netgear D834GT wirless router and PS121 print server.

Print server is new and could not find it on the network yesterday until I turned off my Firewall, I use PC-Cillin internet Security 2005.

I called Netgear about this today and they said that as the router has a hardware firewall I dont need a software one and should shut it off.

I am not too happy about turning off my firewall and also worry that the router one does not get updated.

Is this safe? and wont XP keep bugging me saying my computer is not safe?

Thanks Tony

I'm sure all you need to do is tell your firewall to allow all traffic to the Printers IP address, it supports DHCP for a server generated IP address ?

I would not rely on a routers firewall on it's own either !

Thanks, I'm not sure at all now as the netgear guy said my firewall would slow down my connecction or cause other problems.

i said I do often get "server cant be found" on websites (often MSE) for 5 mins then works fine again and he said this was most likley a firewall conflict.

personally I have lowered the settings on My routers firewall and rely on my software ones, others may argue the case but I run occasional firewall tests to make sure I'm hidden

I just change settings on each to allow traffic for things like this

have you tried the other way....turning the Netgear one off and trying it with just your own firewall

You may like to know I have a Netgear DG834G.

I'm a near computer muppet and have no software firewall (except what XP offers!)

I ran every test at https://www.grc.com as listed above.

I passed every test with flying colours so maybe the Hardware firewall is pretty decent!

Just be careful as the hardware firewall (and Windows one) will stop inbound threats, but if something gets into your system, they won't stop it sending info outbound.

To stop any "leaks" you should use a firewall like Kerio Personal Firewall or ZoneAlarm. Some say they aren't necessary, but for me, what gets sent out from my system is just as important as what's trying to get in.
