SE K608i on 3 (locking onto 2G network)

A friend of mine is considering getting the above phone on the 3 network. They need reliability of signal for voice calls and sms only. Can the K608i be locked onto the fallback O2 2G network to ensure this is the case? I know 3 aren't particularly happy if they find out that this has been done.
