my computer, right click, manage, disk mgmt, right click on partitions and change size.

I suggest before you do this

    1. backup any important data to dvd. (itunes etc)
    2. make sure you have a vista dvd available

    3. ideally do an image backup of the drive 1st to dvd, in case it goes wrong.

I right clicked the D drive and selected "shrink volume". I shrinked the volume by 7GB. This then appeared in a new box marked "unallocated". I then tried to extend the volume in the C Drive, but it won't let me select this (it will only let me shrink it).

Can anyone tell me how I can put the spare space into the C Drive?

    Thanks

Your not the only person to have this problem. Theres some instructions here

    http://www.vistarewired.com/2007/04/07/how-to-work-with-partitions-in-windows-vista-xp-when-disk-management-doesnt-work

This is a solution to your problem, but I no way take responsibility for it, do it at your own risk. You might be better backing everything thing up you NEED, make sure you have your restoration disks ect, and starting from scratch and only having a C drive. I used to partition, now I dont bother theres very little point if your good at housekeeping your files (organised well ect).

The biggest flaw with having multiple partitions is that when you install software people just leave it to the installer to put it in default locations hence why peoples C drive fills up quickly and end up with a redundant D drive.

  • I've looked through this forum and many others over the last few hours but still no luck!

I have some stuff on the C Drive (which is pretty much full) and a little stuff on D Drive, so I want to keep the D Drive, but move some of the spare space onto the C Drive.

As I explained before, I have shrunk the D Drive by 7GB, but this has created a new drive "unallocated" with 7GB.

All the forums I go to seem to be really technical andnot realy answering the question. I have tried putting stuff from the C to D Drive, but then the laptop struggled to find programmes and files, so moved everythin back except my photos.

I know I must sound like a real pain, but finding it really fustrating.

Thanks for all the help so far.

fernando, are you using Windows XP? If so, open Windows Explorer, click on "My Documents" (it should be at the top of the screen), then click your right mouse button.

On the menu that appears move your mouse to Properties and click that option with your left mouse button - the Properties box contains a "Move" button, so click that, select the D: drive and click OK.

All of your data should be moved to D:, although you may have to change some of your programs so they look on the D: drive when you next use them.
  • I'm using Vista.

In my documents, I only have music and photos. My Photos I have moved tothe d drive, but when I moved my music, itunes couldn't locate the music, even after changing al of the settings. All other big files like adobe, I tried moving over, but then programmes couldn't locate it.
