The Leeds dental hospital used to let you go sit down there and wait for an appointment but I have heard they have stopped this. I have just been reffered by my dentist I think this maybe the only way to be seen by them now.0

The downside of getting treatment done at a dental hospital is that the people doing the treatment will be learning.
The quality of the work will be great, and the students are supervised by some really talented dentists - but it's SLOW!
You can write off a morning or an afternoon for every little stage. Examination - a morning. You need 3 fillings - that's 3 afternoons gone. Then they just want to take an x-ray to check something else - another morning down the pan. That X-ray shows a tooth needs a crown - another morning and afternoon gone.
See the picture?
Great for the cash-poor, time-rich, but you'll seriously start to pi$$ off your boss if you have a job!
I know - I was that dental student!!!!!!!!!How to find a dentist.
1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.0 -
anyone know if sunderland or durham has one of these ? thanks:T I love MSE ! :j0

Aberdeen, Glasgow, Dundee, Newcastle (Upon Tyne), Leeds, Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff, Bristol and a couple in London. Oh - and Belfast are cities with dental teaching hospitals.
There are new training facilities around Portsmouth and Lancaster as well, but these aren't traditional dental 'schools' - they are done more by outreach projects - whatever that means! How to find a dentist.

I have checked out NHS Choices which is the governments brand spanking new 80 million pound pathfinder for "Dental Teaching hospitals"
I am affraid that i don't have the time and resources to find out if the information is true or if these hospitals offer a free service but at least if you do live in one of these area's it's a possible alternative to trying to get an NHS dentist.
If you want or need further information check out:
http://www.nhs.uk/Pages/homepage.aspx
If you enter your postcode it will tell you what health services are available in your area or you can do a more general search.
I hope this helps

I believe that you can get treatment at the manchester dental hospital. But i think you have to go early, get a ticket and prepare to wait. However, I am told the treatment is brilliant because students take more time and care. This is only what I am told by a chap at work, so if its wrong dont shoot the messenger. When there's a knock at the door, why do dogs always think its for them?0 -
We got a letter offering us treatment in Aberdeen as we've been on the waiting list for an NHS dentist for a while now.
The catch is... You are treated by a student, who is not qualified, but who will be supervised. Fair enough. However, if the student messes up, you will have to pay to have your teeth fixed by a qualified dentist.
I would have thought that if it was their mistake, they should pay to fix it. Apparently not.0 -
sheffield charles clifford dont do it no more I got a tooth out due to a lamb chop incident cant get it done anywhere
