Paypal wants me to go to the police!

Options
I bought a DVD boxset off ebay. On arrival one of the dvds in the set is from another season boxset. So i emailed the seller a few times but got no reply.

I filed a dispute with paypal and now they've send me an email asking me to report the matter to the police and then send them the police report.

How on earth is this a police matter? Surely this would be seriously wasting police time and i'd probably get laughed out of the police station.

Can't believe such a simple problem whereby all i want to do is return the item and get a refund - has been made into such a huge one. :rotfl:

  • Strange. Maybe they think it's a pirate copy and that's why they think the police should know?

Wow sooner you than me going to the police with that! Wonder if the seller has been sending alot of dodgy stuff out, seems like a simple mistake though.
Its realy annoying on ebay when people dont respond to emails, we'll have to start telling people if they dont contact us paypal will get the police on them. lol

i don't think they're dodgy - recent feedback has been fine.

its frustrating she chose to just ignore me as all i wanted to do was come to a resolution between us.

instead now to get my £19 back i've got to go a make a prat of myself at the local police station. 'Buyer Protection' - what a load of toss.

One day the money grabbers at Paypal and EBay will set up their own proper investigation/fraud/scam department and provide a decent customer service. All they do is refer people to the police costing the UK taxpayer millions of pounds every year.

They do pass on info to the police/trading standards, etc and have their own department for it, unfortunately the problem is large and has to rely on some people doing it themselves.

On this occasion I'd suggest asking Paypal again, I can't see that that would be their advice from the details given, rather they have sent you the wrong (cut & paste?) message.

My partner is in the Police and anyone that reports matters such as this to the Police is generally just ignored. The Police get matters re Ebay all the time and they are classed as non-crimes.

A lot of the time they aren't crimes, so trading standards would be a better place to report as they keep records and take action cumulatively. ie the more reports a trader gets the more likely they are to investigate.

No crime appears to have been committed so basically PayPal want you to waste Police time (and your's as well). If PayPal won't or don't sort the problem out - contact your credit card company to do a charge back for "Significantly Not As Described". You usually have to return the item to the seller, merchant of record (PayPal) or your credit card co., but you should get a full refund of the original amount including S&H.

It's a manufacturing error. I've struck wrong or missing DVDs in boxsets a few times over the years and it's annoying when it happens. It's not the seller's fault, but they are responsible for sorting it out, which usually involves returning it to their supplier for replacement at seller's expense

Why not open a dispute up 'not as discribed' that might get the sellers attention.

Or if they have other items for sale, send them a general question but regarding your item

E-bay fraud varies from force to force. It is getting so common now that most forces are not investigating frauds of less that £500.
