The message is not coming up now!!! I could do with a drink!! Thanks
Hehe, don't let it stress you out too much. If you have a Windows XP/Vista disc or a Dell Recovery disc etc you could try insert it into your cd drive, restart the computer and press the key on startup that allows you to choose to boot off cd (most computers will auto try to boot from CD but some you have to press Esc, F1, F2, F10, F12, Del)
At least this way you know if its an OS problem or a hardware problem.0 -

I don't know what the message means because I've never seen one like that, however I doubt it. The only way I could think of testing it would be to try a CD, however if it is a sudden problem and no software changes had been made then its probably a hardware problem, so you might need to buy another. To get a bootable cd you could burn one on another computer, try this link, its a small download http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/4.0_r3/i386/iso-cd/0

Has anyone been playing games using that computer. Some games come with a starforce protection to prevent piracy. This 'protection' is known to damage dc/dvd drives.
List of games using Starforce: Regularly updated sites dedicated to inform buyers about games which install starforce in your computer:
