    Hi Billsavings,

I'm using 18185 as the access code. There is no tariff message from my mobile when I try to dial out, which I usually (not always!!!) get via my landline calls. It just comes up as the recorded message which I posted above when I try to call from my mobile...

Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Many thanks for your reply Heinz,

I do hope you and the family are well, but I must admit, I'm still confused with it all on 18185.

I'm still confused with it all on 18185.

    From mobiles*:
Dial the 020 access number wait for the voiceprompt and enter the follow-on telephone number. After dialling the follow-on telephone number do NOT press the green "send" button on your mobile again otherwise the call may be carried by your mobile operator!

    * 020 calls from mobiles may come out your inclusive free minutes or your mobile operator may charge separately for calls to 020 numbers depending on your operator and tariff plan; please check with your mobile operator for correct rates.

OK, I think i understand what to do to use the mobile for International calls if I'm in the UK, but what if I'm abroad, and want to call within that country or back to the UK please?

It is not intended to be used from outside the UK.

Technically you could use it but as you would be dialling a UK 020 access number ,this would be treated by your network as an Intl Call from the Country your in,and they would charge you accordingly, which would probaly be very costly before you add 18185 charges.

For cheaper calls from your mobile whilst roaming abroad read : http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-roaming-calls

I can't seem to access their FAQ's right now, but there is one which says:

The advertised tariff is different than the tariff message. Which one is correct?

The tariff message played before each call is always correct. It is possible that the tariff message differs from the charges on our website or other publications due to special offers. In these cases, the free tariff message is always the correct tariff.

I sense a loophole here. I assume the international callchecker takes it's rates from the appropriate websites, so if 18185 put 0.5p/min on their website that's what will be shown on the mse page. Meanwhile they charge 3p/min when you actually use the service.

It was 0.5p for me also using 18185 .Does it still say 3p when you try it using 18185,did they charge you 3p a minute on your invoice?

Ah! I pay my line rental to BT but have primus saver 2 for my calls. I'd forgotten about that as they charge the same as BT for all 0844 calls etc. That must be why, but it's only just changed.
(It says 3p on the voice message.)
