I may be wrong and hopefully someone more knowledgible will be along later but I do not think Meter serial numbers are on my bills.
The gas one has an "M" number which is different from the serial number on meter, and the electric one has a supply number "S" which I think is also different from serial number.
I presume the energy supplier (national grid and in my case EoN) ties up these meter point numbers with the serial numbers?

The meter serial number on your bill should match that on your bill (not M or S number). What you don't say is gas/elec? credit/prepay? If you can post answers to these plus both serial numbers I may be able to advise you more.

Whilst waiting for the OP I will ask Spiro, are you saying that on the bills there should be a meter serial number as well as the M and S numbers?

  • Does it match it a bit? If so, you'll be fine. Is there a sticker on your meter telling you when you meter was last exchanged? If there is, its probably just that they haven't updated their records. In either of these scenarios, you'll be fine. Get on to your supplier asap to get it sorted, and have any numbers inc. meter reading to hand.

The bills I have had have the serial number on (don't know if its a legal requirement) thats how I spotted a missed exchange in the past.

Thanks spiro, just looked closer at my bills and sure enough in the small print the serial numbers are there!
However for the OP's info the gas one does not totally match, eg the number is 1234399 but on the bill it is shown as 0000399 (NB I have made these numbers up)
  • gas and electric meters have been diffrent since 2002 i have been with the same power company since 2002 (hydro electric) the type off meter is credit

right heres the info your m number can be located in 3 ways it will be on your gas bill. or located on the pipework close to your meter possible on a tag attached to it or call the national grid number - the system is automated but if you say help at any time you will be put through to a real agent and it is unique to the property. It is between 6 & 10 numbers long.

The serial number refers to the meter itself and not the supply to it, you can find this on the meter - look for a bar code and the alpha/numeric number will appear above or below it

I hope this helps - and it is what you will be advised by national grid should you call as I actually work for them dealing with such.
