Contract law IS English law.
If the contract is silent (or missing) then I would suggest that they have no express right to require the transfer. However, they may well produce a copy of their standard tenancy agreement which may provide the right.0 -
Apart from the contract you say you have with NPower till November, have you actually compared Southern with NPower?
I couldn't get away from NPower quick enough and moved to Southern when I realised the calculations were miles in their favour. It was the best thing I did, because unlike NPower, Southern put effort into research & development for alternative fuels, and also they don't give their execs the megabucks for their 'performance related issues' but rather better deals for the customers.:jmore dollar$ than sense0 -
A tenency agreement could say anything it likes , it could say you must pray to the moon every third tuesday but it doesnt make it law
Ie in a court of law it wouldnt stand up , the same as making a tenent stay with a certain energy supplier0 -
My OH doesn't want to change over. I haven't compared as yet although from money I've just saved on swapping my Car Insurance & Broadband/Tele service, it would be worth checking. Even with the penalties for swapping I saved £325 on CI & £42 a month on the BB&TV!!! I'm up for a comparison. However, if I signed up with Southern Electric, there's always the danger of a price hike afterwards. Low rates to coax you in then high rates a month later! Ofcourse that could also happen with N Power, we're in a lot of credit with them at the moment.0

Which law are they using to force the op to use southern ?
It depends on what the landlord/tenant contract says.
That is why I originally posted:It depends if this is covered in your agreement.
Check it over and see.
If it isn't covered there is no problem for the tenant, however if it is, then they are using contract law.0 -
WOW WEE, just went on to moneysupermarket to compare (npower supply gas & elec here) & Southern Electric are near the bottom of the list for prices. British Gas came out on top & npower were next so it seems we are with the best supplier.
I will be telling our estate agents to kindly ram their letter!!!
At the end of the day, the estate agent surely do not have the right to go ahead & switch a supplier without the consent of also the landlord? They don't own this property, they're just agents for the LL.0 -
