I have just tried phoning BT to just pay my line rental by direct debit, it was an automated service and when i keyed in my phone number and account details message said i had to pay £33 monthly. I eventually got through to a person and when i said i only wanted to pay line rental he said what about calls, i mentioned that i would sort that out myself, the phone went dead. Question is would anyone know how i can get the right phone number so that i can pay only rental by direct debit monthly?
    hope someone can help please!
  • I have just had a read of the BT website and see that if you pay by a monthly payment plan the line rental is £10.50 as well but was your payment plan monthly or quarterly?

The only thing I can suggest is phoning back and starting again with a new customer service person. Tell them you want to pay your actual bill on a monthly basis by direct debit and not an estimate of your account.

...Also might be an idea for the OP to read this thread about JustDial for free evening and w/end calls and use 1899 for any daytime calls.
I personally would go with Primus Saver Option 2 here instead of JDS (JustDialSaver) at least for the time being and still use Call1899 for daytime calls. JDS don't appear to be answering emails anymore since they found out that they may be sold off to another company and therefore possibly lose their jobs. The thread mentioned by Edinburghlass includes posts about people including JDS customers not getting replies to their emails to JDS unless they are automated type replies about opening an account with them.

To clarify (maybe) about direct debit - some customers are charged the exact bill monthly. People on the budget plan (or whatever it's called) pay a monthly preset amount, but get a quarterly bill. As they are much more likely to be in credit than debit, given that BT suggest the monthly amount, it seems to me that a request to switch to monthly billing makes some sense.

Alternatively, an astute regulator  could lean on BT and suggest that the budget scheme is not intended to allow the company to borrow money from its customers.

But we've got Ofcom so there's no chance of that.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Thanks for helping me. I thought that was a good idea to ask to pay my actual bill on a monthly basis by direct debit and not an estimate of my account, but I have been trying to get to the right bt dept to no avail, just automated and otherwise people who just gave me another number that wasn't any help, i seemed to get the run around, i will give up for this evening, and i will try and phone them again tomorrow.

I was in credit for over £200 and emailed BT they informed of the automated service and how to request my over payment back. I am really annoyed in that although I have seen it mounting I have been undrr the assumption (wrongly) that I would have my monthly amount reviewed yearly. End result is I have gone to JDS no problem and 1899 throughout the day although when I tried 1899 I get an engaged tone.
  • With 1899 are you remembering to dial the STD code even when calling a local number?

Sometimes they are of course just busy and you can usually get through on a second or third attempt icon7.gif
