I was just about to sign up for talktalk broadband/line rental and got this message:

We've just completed a quick test on your phone line and it has told us that your phone number has been disconnected and is therefore incompatible with TalkTalk broadband. It may be that you've simply made a mistake while inputting your number. If this is the case and you have an active phone, please check the number and try again, or simply call us free on 0800 049 6295*.
If your phone number has been disconnected, simply contact BT to reconnect your line on 0800 800 150 (Mon Fri 8am-6pm; Sat 9am- 6pm; Sun 10am-5pm).
Once your line is reconnected please come back and resubmit your order or simply call us free on 0800 049 6295*. BT may charge you a disconnection fee for transferring your line, despite the charge we are confident you will still save money with TalkTalk compared to BT. To find out exactly how much you will save use our competitor comparison calculator or phone 0800 049 6295* to talk to one of our agents.
*Mon-Fri 8am -9pm, Sat 9am-6pm and Sun 10am-5pm.
About a week ago I did a check to see what packages I could get and the check worked, so obviously my line has only just been disconnected? What does this mean? I have no phone plugged in so I cant test for dial tone right now. Does anyone know if it costs to have it reconnected? Obviously talktalk are saying I need to connect back with BT before they can take over and supply my line rental and broadband. Any ideas???

Although Talk Talk could supply you with a new connection if they wanted to, they would rather cherry pick existing BT Customers because its cheaper for them to do so. I assume you have not been paying BT for a working line so your need to get them to reconnect you before you can move to Talk Talk.Bt will require you to pay as much as £124.99p for it to be reconnected your need to sign at least a 12 month contract, and their will be a £70 cancellation fee if you break the contract.

BT do have an offer where they will reconnect for £29.99p but thats an 18 month contract.

this just means your line is flagged as stopped by BT Openreach - ring BT on 0800 800 150 and get them to update line status - your line may have apending cease if not already stopped? No Links in Signatures by Site Rules - MSE Forum Team 20

If he has never rented the line personally, he will need to take out a 12 month contract with BT to get it connected.0 -
you can haggle this to 3 month if you pay full install cost, sometimes you can get it done without having to contract - to do that just ensure they do not put you onto any calls package - only calls pavkages are contracted, very slippery sales team, but you can push them to install without contractNo Links in Signatures by Site Rules - MSE Forum Team 20

With respect for someone that claims to work in the telecom industry you really ought to check your facts.
1.You have to take out a minimum contract of 12 months if you want to rent a phone line from BT.

I don't think I'll bother, I dont even need landline phone calls. I think I will stick with mobile broadband, even though I dont use it mobile!
Last month I topped up twice so used 2gb, for £20. Although I could have topped up once at £15 for 3gb. This month I'm going to try and make the £10 / 1gb last all month.
This has made me think landlines are on the way out, its a lot of hassle to get one connected just to have an ADSL broadband. I can only see mobile b/b growing over the next few years.0
