I don't see what anyone's problem is - the service is optional, you only pay to receive these messages if you want to.
I can't see the point of this service at all seeing as the phone registers the missed call anyway.
Not if the phone is switched off at the time of the call.
O2 are the only network I know of which allow you to disable voicemail, so that when people ring my phone and it is off they hear "the mobile you are calling is switched off" - for free. Most networks do not allow this.
All O2 have done is introduce a useful new feature which most of us will never use.

Actually, I think all networks allow this. It's just a question of finding out how to do it. Maybe a load of star and hash codes, which are probably GSM standards, and which are available via the phone menu or dedicated dialled numbers, or ask CS.
With Orange you have to "request" them to disable the auto divert of voicemail. Once it has been remove than you can control the divert to voicemail using the handset call divert menu option.
