very briefly, because although the mothers had their own perfectly good breast milk, the Nestle company campaigned to convince them that their formula milk was better

it was often mixed in incorrect proportions &/or made up with dirty water, resulting in illness & death

I'm sure someone will be along soon who can explain in more detail

thanks swan, but as a mother of two children whom i was unable to breastfeed i guess i should drop out of this one!

there's absolutely nothing wrong with giving formula when needed, as in your case, or if anyone should make an informed choice not to breastfeed

it was the cynical manipulation of people who didn't need to be using formula & didn't have the right information & conditions for using it properly that was/is the problem

ah but that is the commercial world isnt it..how much stuff in our cupboards to do any of us actually NEED?

personally i think the whole food industry is a cynical manipulation of the consumer..they flog you junk food and addictive chocolate so you then buy diet food, lots of diet food, because it's better to eat lots of diet food at exorbitant prices than just buy and eat less of normal priced food. if we all actually just bought the food we needed without worrying about low cal and lowfat we'd all be slim and a little bit richer!

and that is my rant for the day...hehe:j

The subtle difference in nestles case is their actions resulted (and maybe still do?) in the deaths of babies - slightly more serious than worrying about calories. And thats ignoring their other practises like suing the Ethiopian government during a famine.
