If I use OpenDNS will it mess up my xboxlive settings?

Would not think so but not sure as I don't use it.

Make a note of your current DNS value and keep it safe although if you have it on auto it will change back on it's own so to use OpenDNS you may have to set it manualy.

It is only one change so you can easy put it back to as is now.

The OpenDNS site tells you how to set it up.

    It's very easy.

You may have saved the HOST file as HOST.txt if you have the extensions hidden.

It has to be saved as HOST and nothing else.

Also, if you are copying his example, he put:
127.0.0.1 http:moneysavingexpert.com (Would block this site)

Could be a typo for http:// and that may make a difference.

The easiest solution is to change your DNS to OpenDNS as already mentioned and then in conjunction with that use (free) Bluecoat K9 web filtering software on her computer

    http://www1.k9webprotection.com/

Its much easier than messing around with hosts files

I have a 17 year old daughter who used to download music but now in the current climate I have told her not too.

You don't say where she gets the music from - are you sure she's downloading in breach of copyright law? There are several sites where you can download music for free, such as we7.com. Maybe it would be an idea to direct her to sites like this. Hopefully with a free and legal alternative there will be no need to download illegally.

    No it's definatly illegal.

For anyone searching this query go and look at openDNS it really is a piece of cake to set up much easier than hosts file and it works a treat.

Many Thanks for all the replies

Glad you found it easy, others will strugle I know.

No matter how easy it is, some still find things hard but It could be we think it is easy to us but to others it is not.

I am glad you got it sorted and it's free.
