    Mortgage-free Glee!
This might have been aimed at me, and edited out?

Yes, OH and I are both barristers - I do immigration and immigration-related crime, OH does employment and land law.

Hi NDG, yes I got a bit muddled, so when I realised my error, I deleted that bit of the message. :)

We didn't have fast broadband access, mobile phones, satellite TV, more than 1 telly, dishwashers, computers, etc etc. Imagine how much you could save each month without all these outgoings? We didn't need them then and we don't need them now. We WANT them, and that's fine if we can afford them.

To be fair, some things are much cheaper now, in real terms.

My first microwave in 1983 cost £200. It was the basic sort that you can buy in Asda for about £25 now.

My stereo system cost £800 in 1981. The same price that a 4 year old Ford escort car would cost then.

My first real computer (not counting the Sinclair) and HP printer cost £1,200 about 1993. It was a DX4 with a hard drive of just 420Mb:D I can build a good pc for about £600 now, depending on the graphics card wanted.

Furniture is dirt cheap in the auctions rooms and freecycle always has someone looking to give away a settee.

I do agree though that there is a get now and pay later mentality with some.
RENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I didn't say that, it was DD. I did quote DD before he edited his post though.

I had already guessed you were in law, from your posts. Even before you said.:D

I don't feel that busy, but I'm not a stressy person, so I never do feel that busy.

Sorry, got confused with me quoting!

I like being a barrister. It's fun, and interesting.

I assume the Daily Mail is missing because it's somewhere off this scale? ;)
