Thing that bugs me is we recycle paper/ card one week then plastics next, 2 different colour bags. Bottles to the bb etc. We don't have any kids but always recycle, neighbours up and down road have kids and do not recycle, if they do it's rare. We have one black bag and whatever the weeks recycle bag is. Neighbours can have up to 3 black and no recycle. I know I'm turning into Victor Meldrew(I am 44) but I really wonder why I bother. P S no nieces/ nephews either, when we are gone that's it. So I may as well throw everything in a black bag and to hell with the planet.
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.

There'll be a lot of Victor Meldrew's then. There's been plenty of publicity on it. There is no excuse. A letter through the door warning of a fine and a recycling leaflet is in order I think. But councils must be prepared to support more recycling too.

Meanwhile we are losing services or paying more council tax for EU land fill tax. Whats fair: everyone paying more tax or worst offenders being penalised for not recycling. Where council's seem to have gone wrong before is providing insufficient proof and not providing redress for when things go wrong.

Just thought I'd point out that no recycling bin/box on the curb doesn't necessarily mean no recycling is being done. I don't use the one for glass/cans/foil/plastic bottles because I'm a creature of habit and prefer to take stuff to the recycling area at the supermarket when I go there, rather than forget every fortnight to put it out on the street. Paper is meant to be put out in a plastic sack here, which inevitably blows away or gets water in it in heavy rain. So the only recycling bin I use is the garden waste one.

I have to take cardboard to the supermarket anyway as there's no kerbside collection for that. Taking everything else at the same time is very little extra hassle and just gets rid of it more quickly. This also cuts down the quantity of containers I have from 3 wheeliebins plus a green sack to just 2 wheeliebins.

I'll need to check the local supermarket then at the moment I put torn cardboard in the shed and take it to the council recycling area when I have enough. That would save a good trek.

Good point about other folks way of doing things though.

Usually put out 1 supermarket carrier bag a week (slowly running the stock of plastic bags down) and recycle a lot/compost/use less more so not much waste. When I have a big tidy up I might fill up one black refuse sack. When I cycle to work I pass the piles of rubbish waiting to be picked up and am amazed by the amount of recyclable stuff that is also put out - cardboard, bottles etc. Don't think the recycle message has got through to a lot of people.

I live on my own and fill half a small bin bag per week.

Most of the stuff goes to recycling, the stuff in the bin is just the bits I cant recycle plus food waste (peelings etc).

I really enjoy going up to the tip (sorry, I meant "recycling facilities") and putting things in the correct place.

My suspicion is that a proportion of people extend the concept of conspicuous consumption to a disdain for disposing of their rubbish properly.

We used to struggle to keep our rubbish down but once our council started doing kerb side collections of plastic I have reduced myrubbish bags to just 1 a week. We are a family of 4 and get through massive amounts of milk - we must of had a bag full of plastic. Our council now recyle most things kerb side, but plastic is the most important in helping us reduce the amount of rubbish we put out.

    Interesting thread - thanks;)

less than 1/2 a carrier bag for 3 of us.
All food is composted in the garden, the kerbside collections are for tins, glass, paper and green waste. Tetrapaks, foil, cardboard and plastic milk bottles are taken to our local recycling when we have a bootload so we produce less than 1/2 carrier of plastic packaging.
