I understand what you are saying but have you ever thought of reusable nappies (even part of the time) ? I saw a programme on tv about the carbon footprint we leave, cannot remember the exact stats but it was something along the lines of 'the average UK child has left a bigger carbon footprint in their first couple of years than a child in an African country (might have been Malawi- not sure) in their whole life!'. This is not a dig at you, I do understand the pressures of babies/toddlers/children and everything else that comes with it, but it really made me think about it!
PS We do get flies round the green cone but then thats to be expected!

In regards to the nappies the carbon footprint works out just a little more for disposables due to the cleaning if the nappies. This was on one of the green programs. I also dont think my 8 year old would like me trying to put one of them on him. He only wheres them at night for pee!
I think there was a study (studies) done re the carbon footprint thing which did suggest there was not a lot of difference between real vs disposable but I have also read a lot to state that the study had many design flaws (sorry don't have time to try to find the original links but here are is one I found quite useful recently if anyone is interested).
I was just making a suggestion to you, or anyone else who seems to have nappies filling their bins, that reusables are a practical (as well as eco friendly option). They don't have to be boil washed (40 suffices, 60 for smelly yucky ones!) using eco balls or soap pods (as can other washing) cutting out packagaing from washing powders etc too- we sometimes use balls, sometimes pods, and sometimes powder as I like the smell of washing powder!
With regards to your 8 year old, then of course that is different than a baby or toddler, hopefully my DS will be out of nappies completely by then but of course some children are not (for whatever reasons) and of course there are different implications for an 8 year old!
