I did this when I got nits (from my neice) and would highly recommend it. You have to do it at least twice with a couple of days inbetween as it tends to get the live nits and not the eggs, but when the eggs hatch, they are too immature to lay thier own eggs so you should catch them in time when you do it again! I think i did it 3 times over about 8 days and haven't be bothered with the little critters since! :j Mind you, have a child of my own now (in nursery) who came home with one of those ominous notes the other day! No sign yet!

Yep, that's the way the Bug Buster kit works that I mentioned in a previous post. Except they state that you must comb 4 times over a 2 week period. This is because an egg can take up to 11 days to hatch therefore if you stop too soon, you might end up with lice still hatching after you've completed your treatment.

I think that I was given one of these combs free at the pharmacy counter in Boots some years ago. Might be worth asking if they have them?

  • Most nursery/pre-school/sure start buildings should have them for free, plus you can always ask the health visitor for some. The best way I found for getting rid of them was highlighting my daughter's hair (she was 12 at the time) not recommended for little one's though!
    ;)

And is it just me or does anyone else start to itch the moment nits are mentioned?

  • My daughter is asthmatic and a lot of the lotions are not good for her health that is why I used to sit for 3hrs twice a week combing and picking out nits and lice from her hair. Her hair was very long but always tied up for school then I found out it wasn't school she was getting them from, It was her best friend at home. Once we had sorted out the problem of her friend then my daughter no longer got head lice. The best way to get them out of the hair is by very fine tooth comb and cracking the eggs on the hair shaft. My sister swears by tea tree oil and vodka mixed (I never got round to trying it as I always drank the vodka!!):rotfl: Tried the link and couldn't see anything about free combs. Could do with one for my granddaughters.

Tea tree oil is great, and wet combing is essential, the combination of both is great for both eradication and prevention of head lice and nits. The conditioner can help the combing process (as it lubicates the hair) so a decent conditioner is important, as is the design of the comb ( distance between the teeth etc)....its always best to have a 'just in case' pack lying about i think.
