Our local schools do not recommend using the lotions and potions available to rid children of these pests but to use a cheap shops own conditioner, load hair up with it and continually comb through the hair to remove the offenders. This is because the eggs and lice cant cling to the hair as its too silky making it easier for them to be removed and kinder on the childs scalp. This method also saves the crappy excuses from the odd parent who insists that the lotions are too expensive or inactive. Also due to children who constantly use brand after brand of lotion it stops the nits/lice becomming immune to the ingredients used to irradicate them.

Looks like it's been pulled. Those 250,000 combs didn't last long!
  • My daughter is asthmatic and a lot of the lotions are not good for her health that is why I used to sit for 3hrs twice a week combing and picking out nits and lice from her hair. Her hair was very long but always tied up for school then I found out it wasn't school she was getting them from, It was her best friend at home. Once we had sorted out the problem of her friend then my daughter no longer got head lice. The best way to get them out of the hair is by very fine tooth comb and cracking the eggs on the hair shaft. My sister swears by tea tree oil and vodka mixed (I never got round to trying it as I always drank the vodka!!):rotfl: Tried the link and couldn't see anything about free combs. Could do with one for my granddaughters.
  • My step-daughter's school has had serious issues with nits and unfortunately we get hit every time. This had led to huge problems with my partner's ex who has cited it as a sign of neglect!
We generally use the conditioner method due to A's exceptionally sensitive skin.

Oh and the link for the comb has defo gone :(

I did this when I got nits (from my neice) and would highly recommend it. You have to do it at least twice with a couple of days inbetween as it tends to get the live nits and not the eggs, but when the eggs hatch, they are too immature to lay thier own eggs so you should catch them in time when you do it again! I think i did it 3 times over about 8 days and haven't be bothered with the little critters since! :j Mind you, have a child of my own now (in nursery) who came home with one of those ominous notes the other day! No sign yet!
  • And the link wants 95p for shipping and admin cost via paypal - is everyone else getting that?

The combs haven't all gone though, it's just that they are now asking for 95p to cover costs. Don't suppose they banked on the power of MSE and have been overwhelmed by the demand.
