Thanks all, would you believe it - from the beginning of this week there is a free wi-fi network for two hours a day in the library in our village which the laptop will pick up - so not so urgent now about the PC.
I've had some excellent advice from this and another forum, which I think will solve the problem, so thanks to all.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
You probably have mad spyware, easiest thing to do is go to www.geekstogo.com register (it's free) and give them a short descriptive post of what is happening then they will give you lovely step by step instructions to get your pc healthy.0

UPDATE
Hi- just to say my husband has fixed the problems using the advice given here and from a guy on another forum.
Using the library WIFI, he downloaded AVG, adaware and comodo onto his pen drive via his laptop; also a Norton Removal tool.
Got them all doing their work and PC is fine !
We update them regularly - it's much easier now we have access to the wifi, even if it is only for nine hours a week.
Thanks all.(AKA HRH_MUngo)
