We live in Spain.
Our son collected a brand new computer from PC World in England, used it for a couple of months and then we used it for the seven weeks while we were in the UK. No problems, just fine.
We bring it back to Spain and it has ALL sorts wrong with it. The start page won't load up properly, (we have to do System Restore to get the Icons back), it is soo sloooow, every so often it says it has to close down and the amount of viruses the virus killer has reported is unbelievable. Every so often the screen goes dark and a Spanish advert will attempt to load itself.
How can just bringing it to Spain make all this difference? Could it be anything to do with our Telefonica dial-up internet? This is the only thing that has changed since England where it worked fine on my son's wireless network .Our old computer had similar problems, which is why we bought the new one!
Is it just co-incidence or is it to do with Telefonica's line and what I call 'Spanish Tat' (like the paint that falls off the walls and the extension lead that you can't fit the plugs into the sockets).
Not happy.
If anyone can shed any light on the subject I will be delighted.

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

If the computer was on a wireless network before there's a good chance the wireless router had the PC firewalled. No firewall now, so all sorts can get at the PC, especially if it's not been updated with security fixes, service packs and the like.
Dialup is slow as death, so there's not much can be done about the speed, but it definitely sounds like the PC's heavily infected with spyware, viruses and the like.
You could try a full spyware and virus scan and cleanup, but if it's crippled to the point of being unusable I'd be inclined to reinstall windows from scratch.
It's nothing to do with telefonica, and nothing to do with "spanish tat".
Bottom line, if you let a computer onto the internet without protection, it'll end up full of viruses. I hope you don't do online shopping on it.They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
Thanks for your information.
It has got Norton on it - will that do?
I understand that the dial-up is slow. All we can have here I'm afraid. But even the non-internet applications are slow. It groans to open a spreadsheet!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

No software's of any worth unless it's kept up to date, so check that.
As for Norton, Norton what? They make lots of different software.
I'd download Clamwin and Spybot, update their databases and run them one after the other. It'll probably take a few hours to run them both, but it's just a case of starting them scanning and leaving them to do their thing. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0 -
A little box pops up with Norton Protection Centre on it and does a full scan every day.
Thanks for your help, we'll take your advice.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

This seems like a good deal.
Anyway, it appears that your security software is not doing the job for which it is designed.
What's worse, is that many of the solutions that we may suggest could take an age to download and update on dial up.
Here's the current Malware removal thread.0 -
Thankyou Donnie
The dial-up is a pain but that's all we can have here in rural Andalucia (although some people near us have ADSL, Telefonica has said that our line is 'not suitable' for this.)
We pay 22 euros a month for the privilege of the dial-up - it would be 44 euros if we had the broadband
Not everything is cheaper in Spain!(AKA HRH_MUngo)

You need to shop around, you should be getting ADSL for the price that you are paying.
http://spainadsl.org/adsl/in-spainSo how do you tell if you can get this cheap ADSL in your area? Unfortunately, it's a matter of shopping around and entering your postal code into each ISP's website because each ISP has to install its own equipment into the exchange, the extent of their coverage is very variable0 -
not much use if the phone line's too long, DACS'd, terrible quality, or the exchange it's connected to isn't enabled. They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it0

That's why the suggestion of entering their phone number into every ISP website. There may be one, other than Telefonica, who can provide a service. Dial Up is dire, even more so at 22 Euros per month.
Another possibility is WIMAX.0 -

True, I was looking at it purely from a DSL perspective. Wimax is something for the OP to look into.
