If he is violent towards you again then just call the police. I'm not saying they'll actually do anything mind however my ex eventually got the message that every time he shoved/kicked/threw things at me I would call the police and he'd spend 8hrs in a holding cell so he learned in the end! At the same token, try to avoid provoking him and do your best to walk away from arguments.
With regards to the maintenance, you're entitled to 15% of his wage through the CSA and that's not much more than the £200pm he offered you. In fact it might be less if he pays some of that £1550 into a private pension plan I believe. If he's going to have regular access with his son and share in responsibilities then it isn't an unreasonable offer by CSA standards. If he's going to leave the lion's share of the child responsibilities down to you then I agree you should go through the CSA. They're not the easy option though and they can take years to get regular payments set up.
Becoming a single parent isn't easy by any means. But you're in a much better position than many with that amount of capital behind you and you may well find there are shared ownership schemes in your area that you can easily afford to access. Why don't you try ringing the homeless department at the local council and asking them for details? They should be able to supply you with some information on what's available in your area at the very least.0
