Taxing my Ex-Mobility Car

Hi,

I have read various threads on this little problem of buying ex-mobility cars and changing the taxation class from Disabled to PLG but can not seem to find the answer to my question.

I Purchased the vehicle yesterday. It was driven via trailer to my local garage where it will be having parking dents & scuffs removed, and wont be ready until next week (by which time it will be August).

My question is on the V10 that I think I have to complete, will I be ok with putting that I aquired the car on the 25th but only want tax from next month, because its technically off road during this period?

Any help would be great. Also how long does it take for the ammended logbook to come back with the new class on it?

Thanks

Tell them you aquired it on Aug 1st so you don't waste July's tax.

You need to send the V5 into a LVLO rather than the DVLA. Along with the MOT - if it has one, insurance certificate and a cheque to cover the road tax.

Some LVLO's will do it for you over the counter and the new V5 will follow in the post.

I must admit- the dealer dealt with all that when I bought my car (ex mobility) I think i'd be tempted to ask them to sort it out.

  • Thanks for both your very prompt responses.

Unfortunately I got it from a Car Auction so I dont have the luxuary of getting anyone else to sort it for me?

I have the complete V5 without the yellow section, wont they have it on record when I aquired the vehicle?

Also - you think it will follow in the post quicker than normal? I.e. not 3 weeks?

No. It'll currently be registered by DVLA as being "in the trade" meaning it's at a dealership as the yellow slip is for the trade to notify DVLA of a change of keeper to them. It means DVLA know the person they got it off no longer has the vehicle, its currently herld by a dealer and that change doesn't add another person to the previous keeper count. It's the equivalent of SORN for all intents and purposes so when you come to tax it, put the date you got it as the date you go tax it and the yellow slip that was sent off will cover that.
As said, you need to tax it at your local DVLA office, not the post office. Thats because it needs a change in the taxation class from Disabled to whatever it is. You need to take the V5, insurance and MOT cert to the office. Fill in your details on the new keeper section and ask them what you need to put in the change of taxation class section - should be PLG. THey'll then take the V5 from you and send a new one out in the post.
  • Thanks for your comments Conor;

I just worry that because on the V10 it does state that "Date from when I own the vehicle" and underneath it says "Date you would like to start tax from", but dont want to shoot my self in the foot and put "Purchased on 25th, but dont wanna pay tax till 1st..." so you think ill be ok with just putting "I got it on the 1st and want to start paying tax immediately?"

Yeah. Buying a car and doing it to co-incide with the start of a new month is nothing new or uncommon.
  • because I dont want to put the car into my name yet, will they still change tax class at the DVLA office, without changing the keeper, because im looking to sell the vehicle on at a later date in August and dont want to add to 0 previous owners?

Why do you want to sell it in August...?! Have you bought it to sell or to use?

You wont be able to change the tax class and not add an owner... Unless you're the reg'd keeper
  • No I purchased it from a Car Auction with the intention of re-selling it. The auction house just give me the v5 with the MOT, they didnt complete it for me or anything, it was just missing the yellow slip.

Surely its possible to change tax class without changing owners if its between owners?

Why don't you just sell it without tax, giving the new owner the same V5 that the car auction gave you?

Or can you not do that?
