That doesn't sound like NHS rates to me.

Are you in England or Wales?

14 months ago was Dec 06. The New NHS Dental Contract started in April 06.

The treatment you had would have cost you £43.60 in total if it was on the NHS.

Even in Scotland, that still operates the old system, I doubt it would have been more than £80 in total.

I'm not an expert on all the different insurance policies, but something like HSA might be helpful.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.
  • Just had a quick look at the Tesco Dental Plan and they are giving 1200 points at the moment if you join.

When I joined HSA they covered crowns, bridges up to £2000 for a £17 per mth premium (which I am still entitled to until July) but now if I join again in July or for any new members the limit for crowns and bridges is £500.

So in July I will not join HSA again as I don't feel it is worth it and the TEsco Dental policy at the moment is still covering up to £2000 for crowns and bridges for £16.95 so would be better to go with them, even more so if they still have the points offer on.

Just thought this information might help someone.

I've just got back from the dentist and to cut a long story short, he told me that my previous dentist has done a terrible job and damages nerves in 8 teeth when he fitted crowns.

He said he can see absesses forming in 2 teeth already and eventually i'm going to need work done, and possibly all 8 crowns replaced.

I'm wondering if I should get some kind of dental insurance now? or would I not be able to as now technically I have an existing problem (even though it doesn't need treating yet?)

I've never thought about any kind of health insurance before. Just had a look on the HSA site but they only seem to pay so much of each claim so not sure if it will be worth it.

sorry, still a bit shell shocked from the dentist. I was expecting the usual lecture about flossing and a clean bill of health.

  • Have a look at the Tesco Dental Insurance. I think they only pay up to a max of £2000 and 80% of what you pay but they are the only ones who I think take you on without a check up etc. But read up on it properly first.

i notice the Tesco Dental Insurance states:

    No cover for:
    • Pre-planned treatment at the time of joining
    • no routine dental treatment covered within the first three months of joining (but instant cover for emergency and accidental dental treatment). This is a one-off 'qualifying period' and only applies to the beginning of the policy.
am still on the search...i dont think any of them will pay out if you have already been to the dentist for the check up?

looks like i will just have to cough up....

I've never given dental insurance much thought before as I had good teeth - the crowns I had done were purely cosmetic (ah! the price of vanity...) and until then I'd never had a filling or anything.

I don't need any work doing on my teeth immediately. My dentist was just warning me of what I can expect in the future.

Do you have to go to specific dental surgeries according to who you are insured with? Is it like getting repairs to your car, you have to go to an authorised garage?

my present dentist had leaflets about Denplan...think that's the company - they have a green apple logo. Will have to pick up a leaflet when I take DD for her check up next week.

Please also have a read of my post #7, I have 'phoned them and had the points clarified.

Has anyone any experience of the Tesco dental insurance?

I've not been to the dentist for a while, :o *holds out hand for a slap* but, I have plucked up my courage and been to register.
I've gone for the private option, as having met the dentist, he seems to be a nice person and hopefully, i will keep up with regular appointments.

I had realised that HSA dental would not cover me for treatment...i do have the basic cash plan already but I feel that I will need more doing than that would meet.

The Tesco policy appears to only have a 90 day clause and no mention of having to have visited a dentist in the past 12 months.

So, do any dentisty experts, Uncle Toothsmith and friends, or any mere mortals have any experience of Tesco's policy.

Either way, I'm going to attend my initial consultation, although I'll have to re-arrange for 3 months time and sort out my toothies.

I think all the dental scaredy cats should form a support thread. :rotfl: I've finally decided to sign up to a dentist and already I'm postponing my appointment for 3 months. ;)

    Hi whatatwit.

I'm afraid I'm not an expert on the different insurance policies and the merits / drawbacks of the cover they offer.

I do offer Denplan to my patients, but that isn't technically an insurance policy.

One thing I would say though is that if you've found a dentist you think you might get on with, then don't hang about.

Even in the private sector, there can sometimes be shortages of places, so if you can get an appointment, then go for it.

No, I've not found out any more than is shown on the online terms and conditions.....interestingly though, they do state that emergency dental treatment is covered, even if it is within the 90 days.

Have you read the online stuff?
    https://quoteandbuy.dentalinsurance.tescofinance.com/tscdentweb/pdf/apr_tsc_dental_handbook.pdf

So, I will now arrange my check up for a date the 90 days and see what happen, although I am tempted to ring them to check.
