PAC codes

Just a quickie question. Has anyone found that they've been told they will be charged for a PAC code when trying to follow the advice of Batter Down Your Mobile Phone costs?

My sister was just told by the woman at Orange that she would be charged for a PAC code, which is outragoues as she (and I) have never been charged for PAC codes in the past. Obviously she said no, as this is simply a foot in the door towards a better new contract, but this seems completely stupid. Do Orange really charge? The Woman on the phone made a few obvious mistakes though (like telling my sis she couldn't up grade until the end of her contract.... which we know to be false as i upgraded this weekend 10months into a 12month contract!) and contradicted the t&c of the Orange website regarding student accounts.

Do Orange charge for PAC codes? Do other networks do this now? Tmobile (when it was 121) didn't charge me or my sister to have PAC codes...

  • If you are still within a 12 or 18 months contract with a network then they do unfortunately have the right to charge you for getting your pac code. Even if you only have 1 day left to run, they can actually make you pay that one days line rental by credit or debit card before they will issue the pac code to you! I personally would be embarrassed to ask someone for a credit card payment of 84p but maybe thats just me!! If you get a nice advisor though they may just add it onto your bill for you!

The networks have their own rules for upgrading but by all means do not treat everyone the same. The simple reason being the more you spend and the more revenue you generate for the network, the nicer they will be to you. Although you were allowed to upgrade after 10 months, they would not let your sister do the same because of how much 'value' she has to the network. You could both be paying the exact same amount in bills, but the company take into consideration things like how many calls and texts you receive and how many come from other networks, how many of your free mins you use each month and even how often you call customer services from your phone!!
