Sorry I have no clue about all this. It is a J-reg. Need to top up oil quite urgently. But how do I know which one to buy? Thanks

You are in the wrong area (this is IT) try 3 places above this one (motoring and transport)

For what it's worth, Halfords have a little flip chart in front of their oils so you know what to get.Dave. :wave:0

I would imagine that any good SAE 10-50 multigrade would be suitable. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Any cheap motor oil from somewhere like Tesco or Asda will do.Get it from the shop and not the garage forecourt,it's usually cheaper.
Look for petrol or diesel on the label depending what you car is and dont stress too much about 10-40 15-50 10-50 just get some wet runny stuff in there as running low on oil will kill the engine.0 -
I use motor oil from Lidl. Very good value 10-50. It works fine!0

I currently work at a car dealership (having worked at various stores from the likes of Halfords to Express Factor centres), but we have seen 3 cars here this year that have blown their engine up due to the wrong oil being put in the vehicle (one by a local garage!). This is quite obviously not covered by any warrenty (if the vehicle is under 3yrs old), and the full responsibility of the owner. A large bill in excess of £6k followed
Petrol or diesel on the label means nothing, they are the same oils inside. The viscosity and the minerals/synthetics in the oil are what makes the difference.
Cheap is most definately not always best in this case.
I hope you have not just taken the above advice, as you may pay way more than a half decent pot of oil will have ever cost :A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things. I have worked in the motor trade for 13years now and it's this kind of comment that sees customers blow up their engine! I would be VERY conscious which oil I was putting in my car. Granted a 'J' reg 106 will not require top of the range stuff but a 10w40 mineral oil or semi-synthetic if it's low mileage, would be recommended.

thanks so much.when i did the search from the link provided above (thanks to whoever did so. very useful) i was recommended castrol magnatec 10w-40 a3 b3. Good?QUIDCO £2827 paid out since October 2007:D0 -
10w40 magnatec is more than sufficient, a mineral oil equivelant of the same grade will do just as well, but if you're not sure get magnatec! Glad you checked before just buying anything though!:A Luke 6:38 :AThe above post is either from personal experience or is my opinion based on the person God has made me and the way I understand things.
