are the newyork/paris /disney threads a good idea?

a few times ive wanted to ask a simple question about one of the above places or seen another poster ask something only to get refered to the huge threads about each place and then get ignored

while theyre handy to read through to get a plan..i dont feel individual questions get as many answers as they should

id suggest they get pruned of chit chat and close and made a sticky , then let people carry on asking away in a normal thread

anyone agree/disagree

The thinking behind the single-topic Q&A threads is that useful info will be kept together and in one place.

It's easy to search the thread for info, using the "search thread" function & as so many regulars are subscribed to each thread, it's more likely there will be a response than in a new thread which could sink to P3/4 of the Travel Board over a few hours and be missed.

With regard to the large threads, I've been indexing useful info from within the threads into the first posts for ease of reference. See NY Hotels Q&A / Orlando Florida Q&A (first post) for examples.

It'll be interesting to see what other Travel regulars think - feel free to make suggestions - they're always welcome :)

    heres an example

so i click on the dollar thread..to see if theres any latest deals or knowledge....and its stupid chat about traffic jams

why would people go back to the thread when its turned into stupid talk

its hard enough to sift out the good info without having off topic chat

Its not difficult to skim through a few OT posts.

Woe betide anyone wanting to have some fun. Perhaps we could have a 'report someone for making a light-hearted comment' button and once a person has been found to be having fun, say three times in one week, they could be sent to the sensible corner to cool off for a month :D

There's a useful post about not taking sterling traveller cheques and just a few posts back is another tip about notifying your credit/debit card provider before going abroad so they don't cancel it under the pretence of fraud protection (that's something I'd not heard of before).

I don't think the chat causes any problems & there's nothing wrong with having a bit of a laugh on these forums, it's not as if the object of the thread has altered.

If you cannot take the time to read through the posts, then why should anyone take the time to help you?

Personally I don't see where they are particularly off topic and as I answer a lot in the Disney Paris and Florida threads I will always point people in that direction as I can't be bothered posting links when I know they are already there.

and yes it can be annoying when people say "I know the thread is there but its too long for me to [STRIKE]be bothered[/STRIKE] reading" Well yes its long because people like me have taken the time to answer the questions :)

Nothing abusive in what I wrote, just something for you to think about. However yes, I do take offence when people cannot be bothered to help themselves, yet moan about those that are trying to help.
