BT mobile handsets

Hi,
I've seen the adverts by BT for their new mobile handsets that allow you to access the internet and pick up emails etc., on the move, whilst also acting like a phone. It looks a bit like the Blackberrys.
Am just wondering how these work? If you got one but then closed down your BT line would it still work - can you put any SIM in them (e.g. Orange)? Am just a bit clueless as to how they might work and would be grateful for any advice. Have seen one on ebay but am not sure whether they have any value if they can only be used if you have a BT package.
Many thx.

Seeing as you only get 50 minutes and 50 texts (more available for extra cost) then the package with BT certainly doesn't make any sense.
The handsets are made by HTC (models S7110 or S62), as are the majority of windows-based smart phones. They can probably be unlocked by a market trader - Just ask before you buy!0 -
The 50/50 package DOES make sense as it only costs £5 per month.
You can also use it to make calls at you BT VoIP rate if you are in range of a BTOpenzone or FON hotspot (and other afiliated ones) or any unsecured wifi router.
On how many mobile phone services can you call (for example) Canada for 1.25p per minute off peak??? (this is on VoIP of course)
Then there is the GPRS service for email and internet - again if you are in a wifi hotspot that works at broadband speed as well.
However, BT are crap at being a mobile provider and those of us who are currently using the service seem to be unknowingly doing public beta testing.
Give it a year (if you want to make use of the wifi services) and they might have got it working properly....British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
I won't plug my ebay item, but I am selling HTC S620 and have to say it is a great mobile and has all the right software to connect to the web and check your hotmail email etc and even MSN Messenger.
I think the early BT phones had nightmares with the software, which seem to kill the battery life. Not sure if this has now been fixed. I know loads of people who have removed the original software and just put window mobile on it and it solves the problem.
I currently have 20mb per month and that seems to be enough to run emails and some BBC news surfing, but I wouldn't like to do any more.
I think with more and more places offering free web access i.e. some of the pubs and hotels then this link to BT openzone will die a death.0
