Land Rover Finances

Options
HI all

Im new here and i didnt know where else to trun for some advice

(Maybe a bit of a long one, but i want to give all details so someone MAY be able to help me!)

In April 2003 i bought a 9mnth old Freelander from a Landrover dealer, using Land Rover Financial Services to finance it. We have worked it out that we 10 months away from paying half the amount today.

In August this year, 3 months out of warranty the engine blew up. It had 33000 on the clock. We were told it was a conrod that had blown and that they would fit a new engine for free. We found out later it was a reconditioned engine.

2 Weeks ago the same thing happened to the engine they fitted. The conrod has blown. The car has now been with them since a week last Friday as faults keep happeneing and they keep having to fix it.

Now, TBH im a bit miffed. I dont want this car back as i dont trust it. Its 3 and a half years old 2 engines and 36000 on the clock.

Do i have any rights? Would it make any difference to speak to the finance company?

ANY advice, would be very much appreciated as i feel at the end of my tether with it.

Thanks for listening.
Claire

PS...im sorry if this is in the wrong place, i searched for ages and coulnt think where to put it!! :o

It may be possible to reject the vehicle as unfit for purpose, although I think you would probably have to give them at least one more chance to sort it out.

You are right in thinking that the credit company and landrover are jointly liable.

It would seem reasonable that a vehicle that has only done 33k miles and got through 2 engines is unfit in my view, not sure a court would agree though.

Might be worth winding landrover and the finance company up a bit about making a claim to make sure the garage gets it right this time and/or that they send an expert engineer to look at it, and/or they fit a new engine, not a reconditioned one.

Is it the 1.8 petrol engine??

These are known to fail around about the 36,000 mile mark. My friends dad had one and the dealer advised them to swop it in for a Diesel one.

At first I thought it was salesman talk but I saw it elsewhere on the internet.

Have you tried searching for freelander owners club or something like that where there will be more experiance with the same problems.

Hi, thanks for the replies :)

And yes, its the 1.8 petrol. Ive been warned about the head gaskets going, but apparently the conrods (which was the fault on ours both times) isnt very common (according to the service dept anyway....)

We spoke to a solicitor tonight who has told us because the replcement is causing more problems we can go to the top and ask for a NEW engine, but thats the limit :( Cant swop it. If we try to trade it in to them they'll knock money OFF the value because of the replacement engines (even though its THEIR fault)....so all we can really do is hang fire for the next 10months and give it back.......

Puts you right of though...i know i wont go for Landrover again because of this and ill tell others too

    Thanks for the advice :)
