My free norton trial is about to end.
Can anyone recommend some free security software download. I'm new to all this and haven't a clue where to start.
Also is there anyway I can monitor my 10GB allowance?
Thanks

Not a techie, ok :-)), so wait for a few posts, but I, and I think a few others on here use a free anti-virus software called AVG.8.0. (there are others) but AVG has always worked well for me.

Sorry - can't help with the download aspect :-((If many little people, in many little places, do many little things,

Make sure you use the Norton Removal Tool to get rid of it:

I use Bitmeter to keep track of my up/downoads. When you run it you set up your rules in the 'ISP Restrictions' area.

From the free solutions AVG has always stood out for me. The downloads are every day, so it adds about 30 seconds to your boot time, but scans are run in the background and hardly tax your pc. You also get free email scanner and firewall. All this for the one time cost of naff all!!!!0

Thanks all. Going to try avast. Do I remove norton first or after. Still not sure about which usage one...all very confusing!!0

Download Avast first. Uninstall Norton, then use the removal tool Marty J linked to. Then install Avast."She is quite the oddball. Did you notice how she didn't even get excited when she saw this original ZX-81?"

Free = crap. Even moreso where AVG is concerned. One only has to look at the VBulletin Labs monthly results to realise how poor AVG8 is.
Get NOD32 from ESET. THey also do an all in one package called SmartSuite which includes a firewall.0 -
Conor = crap!

Yeah cos I only have two and a half decades experience in IT so don't know a thing do I?
Are you even 25 years old?
Anyway...
Virus Bulletin test history...
Your freebies.
AVG: 22 Success / 22 Failure / 14 No Entry
Avast: 25 Success / 22 Failure / 11 No Entry
Paid for:
Kaspersky: 42 Success / 16 Failure / 0 No Entry
McAfee: 35 Success / 20 Failure / 3 No Entry
Norton: 44 Success / 6 Failure / 8 No Entry
And my beloved Eset.
NOD32: 50 Success / 3 Failure / 5 No Entry
As long as there are clueless users like the seemingly endless amount of muppets who keep giving me £25/hr to sort out their mess because they're incapable of securing their machines, I think I'll keep paying my £17 a year to Eset.
Go ahead, save a few bob and stick Avast or AVG on but do you really want to trust software with a 50% failure rate?
More importantly THE FREE VERSION OF AVG 8 DOESN'T EVEN DO REALTIME BROWSER PROTECTION.
Remind me again how most machines get infected? Oh yeah that's right - through malicious websites, scripts and ActiveX controls and drive by downloads - all browser based. So it kind of makes sense for an AV solution to scan websites as you load them doesn't it? But not according to you apparently.
With the current DNS cache poisoning exploits doing the rounds and the number of SQL Server vulnerabilities there are, there's no way in hell I'd want to be using a browser without realtime HTTP protection.
If you absolutely must use a freebie, at least use Avast as that does HTTP traffic monitoring. AVG8 free doesn't.
