All that they do is deduct it over a period of time from this years payments. It is a pain but the staff are really nice and try to be as fair as they can.
This is not at all the same situation as the OP's where fraud is involved.0 -
Hi to everyone that has been following my post. Good news!! I have heard from tax credits and the enquiry is virtually complete. They just need my hubbies P60 to calculate the exact overpayment figure and then the enquiry will then be closed. The lady dealing with things has been fantastic and has advised me that as I have fully cooperated with her enquiry, no penalties will be charged for which I am extremely grateful. I then need to arrange repayment of the money and that is basically the end of things. This really does highlight what you all said in that I did the right thing owning up and that honesty is the best policy.
I still feel extremely remorseful and ashamed of letting things get to the stage I did and have learned a valuable lesson from this whole mess and would urge anyone in a similar situation put things right with HMRC. I feel like I have been given my life back however I know things could have been very different and I will certainly never be so stupid again.0 -
I'm so pleased to read your update. I don't think there would have been any benefit in you being prosecuted or 'punished' in any way,as you clearly understand what you did wrong anyway.
Now you can relax a bit (and work out how to repay it!)Tomorrow is always fresh, with no mistakes in it!0 -
Thanks for the update.
I'm glad you are getting sorted now and can eventually put this behind you.0
